How much are music lessons in your area?

I just thought I would post from an English view point (as a teacher.) Over here we get paid about £25 an hour (abour $45) Although this is not what we would charge private pupils.

I am paying $19 a 1/2 hour four my son's Guitar lessons
He goes to the store for lessons.

A lot depends on the level of the teacher and lessons involved. A beginner wouldn't normally pay as much as an advanced student would for a top notch teacher.

I gave private lessons to beginner and intermediate students about forty years ago and I got a few bucks for a half hour back then. Most of my friends who give lessons are now getting about $30 per lesson (don't know if 1/2 or full hour). This is for intermediate students. Some get $50 and some who are excellent musicians still take lessons from even better pros at $50 to $150 a lesson.

If a young student is serious about learning an instrument (or voice) they should be encouraged. $20 - $30 is a small price to pay for a worthwhile passtime that can last a lifetime.

I know that guitar lessons at the local music store is 35 dollars a half hour. I know that my school has some for extra, but I don't remember how much they are.

My figure skating lessons were a dollar a minute!

I'm in Indy. I charge $38 an hour ($20 for 1/2 hour) for woodwind lessons. I typically go to the student. DS's violin teacher is a bit higher, but she's in the Indianapolis Symphony and can therefore command a higher price. These are pretty typical for our area. There are some school connected set ups that are cheaper, but I think they are subsidized.

I wish you were closer.
I wish you could come to me for my son's oboe lessons!
My son's teachers charges $35 per hour, but you have to go to her. She's not that far, but I'd love to be able to have the teacher come to us!

All in all there's not many private oboe teachers, so I guess its a great deal.

Wow -- some of these prices are really low.

My son has probably the best piano teacher in our area -- we were on her waiting list for almost a year. We pay $85 a month, which is generally one half-hour lesson per week plus one group lesson per month involving 10-12 kids his age/level.

My daughter charges $30 for a half hour lesson. She teaches violin and viola. At that price she has no problems getting students.
