How Maxpass works!

I wasn't sure if its been posted, but I thought it might be a good way to contribute, since there doesn't seem to be any info on this board for DL newbies or anyone that may not be familiar with how exactly maxpass works. On the two trips I've taken to WDW I've heard guests and CM's trash talking DL because of the new maxpass system without really knowing how it works. Granted I do like Fastpass+ better, but there's no reason to downplay the strengths of maxpass

1. You are allowed to have more than 1 fastpass at any given time.

contrary to what I've heard from some guests at both DL and WDW, you are completely allowed to have multiple fastpasses. The way it works is after you make a fastpass you are then given a time of when you are allowed to make another. The time you are allowed to make another is when your next fastpass begins, within half an hour if your first fastpass is made at the same time (ie. it is 10:05, and your first fastpass made is open at 10:05) , or within two hours if your first fastpass is way later in the day. Doing this I've had up to 3 fastpasses at the same time (current one, one after current fastpass time ends, and one in the afternoon)

2. Physical Fastpass allotments, and maxpass allotments are different!

Fastpass times for physical FP's and maxpass FP's are actually on different systems. Sometimes physical FP's at the kiosk will have a return time of 2-3 hours from now, while maxpass sometimes has FP's that has a current return time. This isn't always the case but it does happen from time to time.

3. Nightime shows and Fastpasses are not connected.

I was surprised by how many CM's and guest at WDW thought it worked like WDW. You still have to go and get a physical FP for nighttime shows (world of color, fantasmic) that are not connected to the regular FP system. This is the same whether you get Maxpass or not.

4. You can make FastPasses in both parks from either park

again, surprised by the misinformation I heard at WDW. While using Maxpass you can make fastpasses for CA while in DL and vice versa.

That's all I can think of for now! Hope it helps somebody and clears up some of the confusion

thanks for that information! We have never been to DL, but might go this next spring. So any information regarding DL is appreciated:)

There has been a thread going since Maxpass was announced.

To your first point, you cannot have multiple fastpasses for the SAME RIDE on Maxpass. That's probably what you have heard people referring to. Even when your window opens again to make a new MP, you can't pick a ride for which you currently hold a Fastpass.

To be fair, a LOT of people think you can only have one FP at a time. It is one of the most common misconceptions I hear. I’ve even been at the park with APs who have Maxpass and have used it and STILL think that’s how it works (apparently they never read the “next FP available” message since they “knew how it worked already”).

CMs also do tell people this all the time. “You can get your next one when you use the one you have.” A GOTG CM told some people this as we were getting into the line a couple of weeks ago; they were grateful when I explained and showed them otherwise (they weren’t going to book RSR because they thought they couldn’t use another FP until 8pm then).

It’s good to clarify the “can’t have two for the same ride” issue, though.

A couple of things we found out about MP:

You can be in one park and create a MP for a ride in the other park (assuming you have a Park Hopper ticket).

You can even make a MP when your off Disney property, like across the street in a neighboring hotel.

... within two hours if your first fastpass is way later in the day...

Actually, when your FP return time is much later (more than 90 minutes away), MP allows you to book your next FP in 90 minutes. Free FP allows you to book in 2 hours. That 30 minutes difference can really add up as you continue to book FPs throughout the day.

There are several good FP/MP information threads on this board, some with introductory videos. The search bar (upper right corner under your name) should help bring some/all of them up, e.g.
FastPass, MaxPass (this one has introductory videos)

And Casey's thread linked above is a good overview, too. Here is another good overview: https://www.undercovertourist.com/blog/disneyland-maxpass/.
