We can't decide if we should take our car seat or not. This will be daughter's first time to fly. However we won't have a rental car we will be using ME and Disney transportation so we won't need the seat while we are there. Just wondering what some have done.

My DS3 has flown approx 15 times starting @ 15 mos and we have never used a car seat. IMO...I think it would be a crowding issue in the seats and probably not worth the struggle. The belts on the plane certainly secure well enough so hopefully you won't have any problems. One thing I would recommend is to pick up one of those $15 collapsing strollers (if you don't have other arrangements). Makes the lots of walking in the airport easier and easy to check planeside. Also will sometimes get you right to the front of security which can save some headache.

Hi - I wouldn't bother taking it for a 3 year old...we have taken ours on occasion when our boys were tiny (2 and under)and they were NEVER comfortable in it. The seatbelt on the plane was always the wrong size -the stationary, clip part was always too long so no matter how much we'd adjust the belt part the clip was always smack in the middle of their backs! The stewardesses all said that it happens - not all car seats work well on airlines even if they are FAA approved. They always offered to take it and stash it safely for us. Much easier to travel without it IMO :)

I used the car seats on the plane until the kids were 2 and then we just used the regular seat belts from 3 on up.

I brought my daughter's car seat on her first plane ride when she was 3 1/2. It was like a booster seat, but was FAA approved. We had no problem getting the seat belt to fit, and she was not uncomfortable at all, as she was used to the seat in the car and it worked the same way on the plane. Then again, we rented a car and I remember that was a major consideration. If you would only be using the seat for the plane and you're comfortable with her in a regular seatbelt, I guess it would be much easier to leave it home.

Well, I will be the dissenting voice here. My dd is 3 1/2, and we take her carseat and put her in it on the plane.

I was a flight attendant for 8 years, and watched many videos of actual crashes. In our "recurrent training" that we attended every year, part of the time was spent "reviewing" any findings of the FAA concerning plane crashes that have happened recently. Over and over, we were told that seatbelts on planes were not sufficient to adequately protect people under appx. 50 lbs. No matter how much you tighten them, there is just too much "side to side" movement in the seats to properly secure a child.

I am a VERY protective mother. I feel that God gave me a beautiful child as a gift...and, it is my responsibility to keep her safe for him. That means that I don't take any chances where she is concerned....especially if it is just for my convenience, or to save a little money (I know that is not the case here).

I have been in severe turbulence where I have hit the ceiling of the aircraft with my head, and an ambulance had to be called. It is really scary, and it happens VERY quickly...."clear air turbulence" is the worst, and if you fly into St. Louis in the summer evenings....be very careful. A lot of flight attendants get injured on those flights.

Maybe it is just me, but if I were taking ME (I have never taken ME or Mears for that matter with a child), I would want her in her carseat on the bus as well. Just because car seats are not required on busses does not mean that I wouldn't prefer to use one.

My daughter has a large carseat (it goes up to 80 lbs), and we have never had any problems getting it strapped into the plane. And, because she is so used to the carseat, I think she actually does better on flights with it than she would without it...she falls asleep in her carseat in the car all the time...so it must be pretty comfortable. Plane seats would not give her any place to "lean" to rest and sleep.

We have a Peg Perego Pliko P3 stroller for her which is WONDERFUL in WDW. It collapses like an umbrella stroller, but has a full shade, can recline fully, has a "leg rest" that pops out to support her in a fully reclining position, and comes with a tray and cup holder that also folds umbrella style. It is a GREAT stroller. You can also buy a full rain cover that snaps on for that unpredictable Fla. weather. The great thing about this stroller, is that it folds VERY small, but can easily support her carseat for trips thru the airport. She is always SOO excited at the airport that she wants to walk/run with us, so we use her stroller to hold the carseat, and many other carryon bags. It actually works well. I will be VERY sad when she is too big for strollers!!

You're the parent...do what makes you feel comfortable. But, since you asked, I will give you my advice.

Good luck with whatever you decide, and have fun on your trip!!

We have always used a carseat for DDs up until now. I do not know what to do this trip since she weighs 45lbs and is 45" tall (turned 4 in March) and has outgrown her carseat. We use a booster seat at home and don't really want to have to purchase another carseat. Is it safe for a child this size to use a seatbelt on the plane? Also what do we do about ME? We have always rented cars in the past but decided to try ME since this is a unplanned budget trip and would like to save the money. Are there any should strap seatbelts so that we can use her booster?

we used a car seat on the plane in April, when my daughter was 3. We rented a car and needed to have it with us, anyway. I'm glad we had it on the plane, but it was a chore dragging it through the airports!

There are no seatbelts on the DME buses. You should just put the booster underneath in the baggage compartment on the bus. Buses are designed to protect the passengers without having to use seat belts.

That is tough, becuase booster seats are NOT allowed on the plane. I would say, use your best judgement, and do what you are comfortable with. We traveled with friends in April, and their daughter is 42" and 42 lbs. They also use a booster seat at home, and brought their booster seat for the rental car, but did not use it on the plane. My dd is 3 1/2, but she is tiny...she weighs only 30 lbs.

I think the best advice is this....put your child in a regular seat in the car and buckle her in (detach the shoulder strap). See how tight and secure you can get the seat belt, and ask her to wiggle from side to side....if she can wiggle too much, she is not yet safe. If the seatbelt seems to lock her into one place well, you are probably fine.

Just remember that 95% of all airplane accidents happen during takeoff or landings (not including turbulence). When a plane touches down, it is still going over 130 mph. Wind shear and other events can cause a plane to "wiggle" upon landing. You want to make sure your child is strapped in pretty securely...just in case.

But, the bottom line is...YOU are the parent....do what makes you feel safe. You are in charge of this child. If you feel that she is secure in a seat...she probably is.

Thanks for all the info Becca. My son will be 2 1/2 when we go and the car seat issue has been brought up with DH and myself.
This is my first post. I have been reading for a while now.
I am still trying to decide to rent a car vs. use Disney transportation.

Thanks for all of the advice. I really have to think about this DME thing and not having the girls secured.
