I just bought a new pedometer and I am curious if anyone knows about how many steps are in a mile? I testing out for the first time today and in the hour and 20 minutes that I have been up I have walked 1,256 steps. I am anxious to see how many steps it will take me to reach a mile, that is if I reach a mile of walking!!

Well it obviously depends on your stride but there are 5,420 feet in a mile (I believe if I remember correctly) so if you just average 1 ft/step then you would need 5,420 steps. So your steps so far would be around .23 miles.

Becka, are you a statistician? ;) You sure did answer this with some great data! And I saw your CB post on stats last week, hee hee! ;)

Good luck, Debbi! I bet you walk quite a bit every day and you didn't even know it!!!!!! :)

Nope but close. I am an amateur mathematician. I spent 4 years getting that math degree so I like to take it out for a spin every now and then! :teeth:

Do you have a math problem you would like me to do for you? ;)

For me it is 2650 steps...I guess thse little legs take bigger strides than I thought. Good luck

My pedometer allows you to set your stride length. Basically, measure 10 feet, then stride "naturally" and count how many strides you take. Divide by 10, and you'll have your average stride length. I average 2400 - 2500 steps/mile. (I don't really remember my stride length; I think it's about 2 & 1/2 feet)

My pedometer also reads out miles and calories burned.

My 10, 000 steps is about 5 miles for me. Can't wait to see what I walk at WDW!

becka- do you balance check books by any chance?!?!?!

I do about 4 miles for 10,000 steps. I'm so glad there are other people counting steps here. I'd love to have a step counting thread and compare notes. I haven't worn mine for about two weeks and it'd be great to have a little competition or accountability to keep me in line! I know I walk more when I wear it.

Well, my day is winding down, it is 8:45 p.m. here and I have walked 14,077 steps today which according to my counter is 2.6 miles. I will have to measure my stride because my pedometer does have that feature, but I didn't set it (duh).

Thanks for you mathematical answers, I never even thought of it in terms of math...I need to go back to school.

Have a great day everyone!

Actually, Becka, there are 5,280 feet in a mile. I have no idea how many steps that would be.

The battery died in my pedometer. I think it would be less expensive to buy another pedometer since this pedometer was very inexpensive yet it uses a watch battery.

Any suggestions for a good pedometer, anyone?

Katholyn, I purchased the Weight Watchers pedometer and so far like it very much. I bought it off of eBay, and they had many other brands to chose from, you may want to check it out.

I have an Omron pedometer. It measures steps, miles and calories burned (if you put in your current weight). I love it! I have been using it for about 3 months and I would be lost without it.

QVC, (yes, I am the QVC queen). My steps are 14 inches, and today I have walked 3/4 mile. I also just ordered a walking thing which I can't think of what you call it (man, I hate when my mind does that) so I will be walking on it nightly. My scale is off limits untill April 30th I obsessed over the fact that for 5 weeks I have lost 10 pounds, none over the last 2, not any. I am not weighing, just sticking to Atkins and exercising.

Hmm.... I never realized how much of a different there was between taller and shorter folks. My stride length is 23", so I take only a little more than half as many steps in a mile as mickeyfan1.

The only reason I have ever remembered how many feet where in a mile is because those numbers are the last 4 digits of my phone number! :)
