How many sports do your kids participate in?

so i was talking to a friend this AM and commented on how basketball was ending in a few weeks, but then baseball would start (for DS) and soccer would be starting soon (for DD) and she also swims... and she said that she just didn't know how we did it.

so DH (full time) and I work (30 hrs wk). DH and friend usually co-coach each team sport (basketball, baseball, soccer). swim of course is by swim team coach at Y. sports for one child don't overlap except maybe a week of 2 at most. swim is for health reasons but she also  it. we don't force our kids to play, they enjoy it. if they want to play, we play... unless it gets to be too much or cost too much- and as long as grades aren't falling.:thumbsup2

so my question is this....

how many sports are your kids involved it?
do you feel like you are overloaded?
do you get criticism from friends?

ok... maybe i had more than one question... but i just feel like when i was growing up- esp as a girl- there weren't that many opportunities...and i wasn't and still am not athletic... at all!!:rotfl2: DH was very athletic and participated in lots of sports in school.

just curious...thanks

DD does karate and dance year round. Doesn't do any team sports and really wants to take tennis lessons. DH makes me cap her at 2 sports and Girl Scouts. Of course karate is 2 nights, dance is another 2 nights, GS on Saturdays and an altar server at mass on Sundays. So I don't push my luck.

Of course there is this part time tennis camp run through the parks program in the summer...:rolleyes1

Previously we used to do dance (tumbling, cheer, tap/jazz/ballet, hip hop-not all at once) & swim lesson for dd and hip hop & t-ball for ds, but now just sports for both kids. We have practice once a week & games once a week after a few practices:
Nov-Jan Basketball
Mar-May Spring Soccer
Jun-July T/Baseball
Sept-Oct Fall Soccer
Whenever it fits Swimming

Two days a week doesn't bother me at all and if they wanted & I had the $$, they could be in something everyday. Its good exercise and they make friends. They also skate (dd-roller, ds-rollerblade) some on weekends, just for fun, no lessons offered. DS will be old enough to play football this year, which he has been wanting to do. I don't get bad comments at all. My mom pays the monthly fees & I pay for registrations & uniform/sports gear needed. She attends all games & her dh and my in-laws, SIL, & DN attend about every other game.

Basketball, then baseball. Cub scouts run concurrently, but only conflict occasionally. We take the rest of the year off.

With four kids in our family, we allow them each to choose one sport or other activity at a time and they also participate in Scouts. No I do not feel overloaded, but I do manage their activity level to ensure that we are not gone several nights a week and then running around to games all weekend. That's not the life for us. We like our weekends free for family activities. :thumbsup2

my son 12 is invloved with 2 wrestling (wrestling for his school and for the city). this is his favorite sport. during summer, he plays baseball. he did soccer two years ago, he also did basketball a few years ago.

my daughter played soccer a few years ago and it was very hectic as far as the schedule goes. sometimes their schedule collided

both girls are usually in gymnastics. We need to sign them both up for next session. They do one at a time right now. My youngest wants to do dance and gymnastics in the fall, so that will be the first time she'll have 2 activities. I figured it's o.k, because she'll have 1/2 day Kindergarten then.

In the summer is when they are super busy. DD6 (7 years old in the summer) does swimming, tennis, and golf lessons. DD4 will do gymnastics and swimming.

I think a couple is o.k, as long as they are not burned out.

My kids are allowed to do one sport and one non sport activity during the school year. I have 3 kids and it gets to be way too much.In the summer they can pick a day camp that is usually a one week program and my 2 dses will take swimming.

My son is currently in basketball and soccer. BBall prac. is on Tues. night for only an hour and the game is only an hour on Sat. Soccer is on Sun. for an hour and there is no practice. Bball ends soon so pretty soon he will only have soccer.

My daughter is currently not in sports. She decided she didn't want to play soccer anymore and we are on a break from gymnastics until spring. So right now her only activity is girl scouts.

Actually this is enough for me. Esp. this year my son is getting tons of homework and lots of projects. School has to come first. But so far we are doing just great with the balance that we have now.

sound slike us too. one practice per week and one game per week. swim is 3 days per week... but we will be through with church on wed nights soon so that won't overlap. and all the inlaws and outlaws enjoy it!!;)

I limit mine to one sport also lets know how much they really want to do a particular sport. dd is a cheerleader but with that comes cheernastics too she technically she is in two but it goes hand in hand. ds doesn't care about sports but loves anything to do with the library he is in several book clubs and volunteers there. dd is gone several nights a week and ds is gone almost every afternoon to the library but is home when it closes :rotfl: we only live a block and 1/2 from the library and 4 blocks from the school so i don't worry too much about them and they have their phones. ;)

ds6 - tae kwon do, basketball, soccer, tball
dd6 - basketball, soccer, tball
dd7 - irish dance (3 times a week), modern dance, soccer
ds10 - soccer (spring, winter, indoor winter), basketball, baseball (2 teams), flag football, volleyball - he's on 2 - 3 sports teams each season
dd12 - just theater and chorus!!

Ds10 is the only one with a nutty schedule, but his friends are just as bad. We carpool A LOT, and my parents live in town, and both drive minivans. :lmao: He has several games each weekend, and practices almost every day. We're off this week, and he's going nuts - it's in the 40's today, so he's roaming the neighborhood with his buddies.

DH coaches ds10's travel soccer team, and helps out with the twin's tball.

DD7 pretty much just has softball now (with Brownies year-round).

My DD8 does swimming all year round. During the school year she swims 3 days per week and the summer is 5 days so we do not have much time to do anything else.

When dd was young, she could play one sport per season and Girl Scouts. That was plenty for us. It did get easier when she was old enough to start driving herself to everything! :rotfl:

DD & DS have:
Soccer Sep-Nov
Soccer Mar-May

I do want to sign them up for a summer sport and was thinking Softball and Baseball. For anyone that does Spring Soccer and Softball/Baseball, do they coincide? Will I have scheduling problems?

I forgot to add that my stepsons used to be in every sport under the sun and expected dh to pay for half but never told him when the games were or where so he didn't pay and she has since realized that with as much as she was spending she just couldn't keep up so now they are in one sport a piece and dh pays half b/c she is now letting him know the schedules. my point is that she got a reality check.

but they are usually in something different every year they are just now thinking about what they want settle down with. so we still don't know yet :rotfl: but it's good for them to know what they like and don't like.

Here, it usually starts as soon as spring soccer is finishing.

DD10 plays basketball and takes dance. She used to cheer but decided she didn't like it (thank goodness, the money was getting a bit ridiculous!). Actually I see it as being very easy now.

When my sons were younger; one played football, basketball and baseball. The other played soccer, baseball, took karate and guitar lessons. It could get very hectic!

our spring baseball and soccer usually conflict- but in my case it's dd soccer and ds baseball. we just work it out among ourselves and sometimes with out "sports buddies". there is a family that our 2 ds play almost everything together so it works our for carpooling
