How many should I reserve?

My family of 6 is heading to WDW in September. My mother and her husband may or may not be joining us. Should I do all of my ADRs for 8 and then just lower to 6 if they do not come with us? Or is it better to reserve for 6 and bump it up to 8 if necessary? I am assuming the first option.

In my opinion, the way Disney works things it's much easier to show up with fewer people than it is to try and add extra people at the last minute, especially if you have to bump up to a larger table. The only thing I wouldn't be sure about are prepaid meals and those requiring a credit card hold - don't know if you're charged when you show up with fewer people.

you would be charged for the no shows in your party. At least for F! packages and Askerhus. Not sure about all the others, but I would guess the same rules would apply.

You may not be able to just change your party size when calling to rebook the tables regardless of going to larger or smaller party size. It's not that simple. They will cancel your existing table and then offer you what is available. So if your tabletop for 8 was available but you go down to a 6 and all they have is tables for 2 left and your 8 top you will not be able to get an ADR at that time. I would try to work it out as soon as possible b/c Disney has the right to refuse you a table if you show up for an ADR that is larger/smaller than your party size (and there has been the occasional report of this policy being enforced, but usually during peak or free dining times which is traditionally September). Also be aware that ADR's for larger parties are harder to get b/c most of the resturaunts have fewer tables that can accomadate those sizes.

Thanks for the info and thanks for the move to the correct forum.

Well then, I just hope that my Mom figures it out before my 180 day window.:thumbsup2
