How many Quarters/Pennies?

I really want to do the pennies with my daughter when we go the end of this month. We will be going to all the parks (at least once). I'm also bringing laundry supplies (I would like to not use them, but just in case). We will be there for 5 days/6 nights. How many rolls of each would you recommend? She's almost 6 (if that would influence the answer any).

Here's a list of the penny locations -

http://www.presscoins.com/Listings/WDWChecklist.pdf

There's hundreds of them, so you may want to go through the list & pick out favorites to look for, or just set a number that she's allowed to get.

Have fun collecting! :) It's one of our favorite activities, and we hope to finish getting them on the next trip.

There are so very many of the pressed penny machienes! I would suggest that you set a number per day that she would be able to add to a pressed penny book. That way she will pick and choose but it will be fun for her. My DD has been doing this for years she saves about $5-$10 in quarters between trips and then pairs the quarters and pennies in an old altoids tin. As far as washers and dryers I think it is $2.00 per load for washing and $2.00 per load for drying. We usually stay in a 1Br at OKW so I don't know how much laundry costs anymore!

How much does it cost to press a penny? My kids will be 8 and 12 next trip, and already have tdo autograph books completely filled, so I thought this would be a nice project for them to do this time.

I filled one M & M container alternating between the two quarters and one penny. When it runs out, there is no more left. We go to WDW every year so I want them to add to the collection as we go.

I tried the website to see where they were located, but it wouldn't work. Any other sites that list them? Thanks!

I second the m&m container. This is the plastic tube type that mini-m&ms come in. Put in 2 quarters, then a penny, 2 quarters, then a penny, 2 quarters, etc. That way you don't have to dump them all out to get a set. Oh - it's 2 quarters to press one penny.

We don't allow our DSs to do the pressed quarter machines. I think those cost 4 quarters to press 1 quarter. :sad2:

You'll also probably want to buy the pressed penny book. It's a plastic folding holder "thing" for the pressed pennies. You can find them at most gift shops right beside the machine or at checkout. Anyway, be aware that they hold 36 pennies, plus 6 more if you use the quarters spots!!!

Have fun - we love pressed pennies!!!! (they're great souveniers)

Alright, I have to ask this because it has been bugging me...

About the M & M containers...we couldn't get quarters to fit in them! What did we do wrong? They are the "Mini-M&M's". Is there a different type of tube???

This perplexed me before our trip. (We just got back a week ago.) My boys and I saved our Mini M&M containers and one day got all of the quarters and pennies ready to load into them....alas!! No go!

They ended up just taking them in little Ziploc baggies.

What's the deal?

Mine is the mini container. I put 10.00 in quarters in the container. It will hold some more but I thought for three kids it was enough. I too thought that they wouldn't fit because it looked close, but they fit nicely.

Thanks so much. You guys are a great help! :thumbsup2 I went and got 2 rolls of quarters. That will be plenty if she stays interested. If not, I'll just bring the quarters home. :goodvibes I'm going to see if my grocery store has the mini M&Ms today as I have to go by the grocerty store.

One other question. The books that you put these in - are they the same in every gift store or do they make them with different designs? Just wondering if we should buy the first one we find or if there would be one with one of her favorite characters on it elsewhere?

ksloane, they are in almost all gift stores...check by the cashier's area. There is only 1 design that I have seen...blue overall with Mickey and Minnie on the front. It's a 4-fold plastic mini binder and as you open it, Donald, Pluto, Chip & Dale, and Goofy are on the other "pages".

TAKitty, did your quarters fit flat into the M&M tube, though????? The tubes I used weren't wide enough. The quarters wouldn't lay flat.

For those who do this and are traveling to WDW by air, be aware that rolls of coins can cause problems with the x-ray scanners.

Put your coin rolls, tubes, etc, into a ziploc in the outer pocket of your bag, then pull them out of your carryon and put them in a bin to be scanned separately. If you leave them in your carryon they are likely to fall to the bottom and cause TSA to have to take out everything in your bag whilst trying to find them. I would not advise leaving them in checked baggage, either.

:thumbsup2 Thanks so much DisneyZigs. I didn't want to buy the first one we found and then find one my DD deemed "better" later on.

I got a Mini M&M Container today and let my DD eat them. The quarters fit perfectly. They even have room to spare! I'm going to get a couple more next time we go. I keep quarters for her at school (I teach) for the pencil machine and such. This is a great way to store them. An excellent idea TAKitty!!

Mine fit flat. All I can say is that maybe you should try a different M&M tube. :sad2: .

I collected most of my quarters from our garage sale. Only one more tube to fill in the next couple of weeks.

There is more than 1 design for the folder-at least 2 different ones. I actually have 3 different ones but one is from 2001 so I can't say for sure they still have that one. But I think they had both designs in most places.

I too have had good luck using the mini M&M containers. DisneyZigs-are your's round or do they have ones that are sort of flattened? Do they have any embelishments/toys on them? I've got them in 2 sizes-one about 3" long and the other about 5" long and they both hold the quarters perfectly.

I also totally agree about the TSA problems. I had my carry on searched on the way home from Disney in May. I had the mini M&M containers, the pressed penny book, several metal pins, and my metal camera all sort of grouped together in one spot in my day pack. I will put them in 1 large ziplock and take them out of my pack to go through the machine seperately the next time I fly.

Hi

Went to DWD this past June with DD5, I had her alternate 2 quarters & 1 penny and filled one M&M minis container. I put this into a ziplock bag along with my quarters for laundry and then placed in my carry-on. I had no problems with airport security.

I allowed DD to do 2 pressed quarters (5 quarters each). She had fun looking for machines. She is really into the Princesses so mostly did those. She is talking about adding to her collection on our next trip in the Spring.

The material content for pennies changed in 1982 so pennies made before this date have less zinc in them. To clean pennies, soak in vinagar.

My quarters fit great in an old perscription meds tube. $10.00 worth was perfect. This will be my first trip in 7/8 yrs, so Ill probably allow myself to fill 2 books (72P and 12Q) Unless they have specific books for the qs? I thought it would be great to have the 2 books added to my basket that I was going to order to be delivered to my room when we arrive. (That could be my little *treat*) :cool1:
