How many points to purchase at Riviera?

Thanks everyone for the useful advice. I've decided that 125 will suit us well by giving us more flexibility while not stretching us now like 150 pts would. Will look at having a 2nd home resort near MK or simply buying SSR resale later on, but for now I just informed my DVC guide and she's writing up the DRR contract. We already have a reservation for a week at a Riviera deluxe studio in early December (booked as a guide hold for now). Excited!

Congratulations!!!

Myself and adult son are also about to buy into Riviera. Thanks for all the information in this thread.

FYI: if you buy 250 points and have a Disney Visa, you can get a $6500 discount (regular 5k discount plus 1500). It applies even if you do separate contracts, so long as they total 250 pts. My mom decided to jump in also at 125 pts, so with the discount we're each essentially buying at Riviera for $169 pp!

Good tip thank you. Yes we were told that buying 300 pts there is currently about $7,000 discount and if you were to use a Disney Visa, an additional $1,500 discount would apply.

Hm, that's not what I'm seeing in the chart they provided for Riviera, but maybe you're already a member and can get additional discounts? If not, I just see a $7500 discount total for new members. $4250 developer credit, $1750 additional developer credit, and $1500 Disney Visa credit.

That sounds about on par yes, don't quote my to 'exactly' as I was estimating for the sake of discussion... your information sounds precisely right. In the end, a good deal 'IF' Riviera was your cup of tea.

Thanks for this and your other replies! I just heard back from my DVC and they will give me the previous incentives, meaning $27,200 for 150 pts instead of the current $28k. So that saves a little and it does seem from what everyone is saying that I will need more points is I want to do this.

Does one get double points with add-ons like one does ? If I were to buy 50 later for more money, would they give me 100 to start?

I also didn't know about fixed weeks, but I don't think it would work for us. We mostly only travel during adventure season, but it can vary between early December and sometime in January.

Still not sure if I should stick with 100 or buy more. I can pay for 125 right now; for 150, the extra cost would have to stay in my Disney visa card for a few months after the 6 months 0% financing so I'd be paying some interest (though not too much...)

:scared1: That price. Are you sure you want to pay that much for RiV's location?? Buy resell and stay at one of the originals which are the best locations and save a ton of money. I only paid 16K for 160 points at BLT in 2009 and we've never had an issue booking at other locations at 7 months out.... maybe I'm just getting old because these prices sound insane to me! :rotfl2:

You might want to take a look at current pricing...$100 pp for BLT ain't happening even on resale -- it's closer to $140-$155 I believe.

if you were to buy 160 Points at bay lake tower today it would cost 23-25,000 resale. 11 years does change things lol.

I know its a big assumption but Riviera could be quite interesting if Disney does expand the Skyliner access. Which I'd imagine they definitely will. Its safer, Cheaper, Greener, and likely a lot more efficient also. It already only takes 7 minutes to get to Epcot from Riviera and 10-15 minutes to get to Hollywood Studios. sometimes it takes 15-30 minutes to wait for a bus.

Yes I'm aware of the price increase... I just could never bring myself to pay the prices that direct is charging nowadays.

It is very high. Its why people are interested in buying Riviera, SSR, AKL and OKW direct and really nothing else. And also Copper Creek if u get in on the bonus points. If you buy BLT today its $235 a point vs Rivieras $195(188 11 days ago).
160 at BLT now is $37,600 :o

:eek:Yes that's crazy ....eventually I'll give my contract to my little boy for his family to enjoy (he's only 14 now). I can say hands down we've gotten our moneys worth..... we've been to DW 24 times... also Vero and Aulani. I'm always borrowing points from the next year. It was a great investment for us and I'm grateful to have bought when we did.

Congrats on the purchase!

We purchased 250 points at 188pt and received 3,500 developer credit with an additional 1,500 credit for existing members. Final price per point was $168. We closed in early January. They did split it into 2 contracts and there was no additional closing costs because the amount due did not change after I asked them to split it. Its a good idea to split so you can unload in stages and probably at a better price should the worst case scenario unfold where renting the points is not enough and your forced to sell to raise immediate cash.
