Hi everyone, I am doing my research on if DVC is a good fit for my family or not. I am unsure of how many points to get. I've looked at point charts and all of that so I have a good idea of how many points would be a good fit for my family. But I'm curious, if you don't mind sharing, how many points do you own? I'm wondering if there is an average number of points that most people have or not. Thanks!

Well to better help you we would need info such as size of family, length of stay, where you want to stay and how many trips per year / 2 years.

I have zero but been looking into it aswell.

We recently purchased 75 direct points and 175 resale, for 250 total. We are a family of 4, with 2 DD ages 6 and 2. We have stayed at 2 DVC resorts, with a 3rd at the end of this month, using our points for the first time. We targeted 250 as hopefully enough to cover our usual April trip of 7-9 nights, but wanted to start going for 5-7 nights in late summer or early fall as well. We have stayed in 2 BR and studios, and are willing to stay in any combination of studio, 1BR and 2 BR as needed to make those stays happen. We bought all our points at SSR, partly because of the finances of it, but more so because we really enjoy the resort. We are very flexible on dates, rooms and resorts, so we felt 250 would be a good start for us, but recognize we might need more as the kids get older and we need more space. I’ll let you know in 2-10 years how that plan worked out for us.

I own 100 points. We generally use them for Spring Break (a few nights in a 1 bedroom) along with a few nights at a beach resort (non-Disney). We are a year out from our oldest going to college so we are not thinking about adding on yet. I'm sure at some point in the future we will, especially down the road when grandkids are in the picture.

Family of 5. 185 AKV (160 resale, 25 direct). Owners since May 2017 and have stayed in studios (as a family of 4) at AKV, Poly, VGF. In a 2 bedroom at OKW post reno (loved the space) and a 1 bedroom at BWV. We've done a lot of split stays.
The kiddos are little so for now we don't mind studio stays and taking advantage of the value category at AKV. We've had good luck with it. We have enjoyed all of our stays at all of the resorts.

I have also sold & transferred holding points once, and rented out about 100 points thru David's once. I don't think I've gauged the "right" amount of points for my family yet I'm kind of just going with the flow.

Our next vacation is in Jan 2020. 3 day Disney cruise followed by a 5 night stay in an AKV value studio. I waitlisted a 1 bedroom value right at the 11 mo. mark hoping it will come thru and replace the studio stay. Don't mind either way. I am going to try to book a 1 bedroom at BLT at the 7 mo. mark for the night before our cruise to try out the resort as I have an interest in buying there if all goes well. I would use BLT points for 1 bedroom stays since they are roomy and we'll need that as our little ones get bigger.

200 at AKV and 135 at BLT.
Thinking of picking up a 60-100pt BCV, if that's even possible. At which point we seriously need to stop.

It really depends on when you travel, how often and the size room you need. For example, if you want to go every other year for a week during Sep/Oct/Nov/Dec in a Studio, you could get away with as few as 40-50 points. If you want to go every year in July for a week in a 2 bedroom, you'll need 300-400. Average doesn't really matter, I would look at the point charts...consider when you are most likely to travel and what room size and view you want..maybe add 5-10% onto the current point chart of your favorite hotel.

Yup. Depends on resorts you want to stay in, too. Generally speaking (if choosing lower room categories - though they may be hard to get), SSR, OKW, AKV, BWV are going to give you the lowest point options, medium would be CCV, BRV, BCV, and BLT, and you'll need the most points if you want PVB or VGF (and now Riviera).

We have only 60 points at BWV which we have stretched far by getting standard view studios. We'd like to get another 30-60 so we don't have to worry about standard (bonus if we get them kind of thing) and maybe for an extra night. My DH would like even more points as he is thinking he'd like a 2 bedroom so he can sleep in the living area by himself and get up early, go in and out of the room, etc without anyone getting violently angry at him. :rolleyes1

210 at BWV for F&W in the fall and 160 at AKL for F&G in the spring.
It allows us to get a 1 BR for each for the week. We either get a lot of room to spread out or have our kids join us for the week.

Not enough, .we. Own 350 points, 100 OKW and 250 SSR . We go to 2 times a year, once in the spring and once in the fall for a week .

I own 175 in total (75 direct CC, 100 resale AK). My brother owns roughly the same amount as well. We combine our points to book 2 bedroom villas and still have enough points to do smaller trips in studios without them.

We've got 160. When we bought (just a few years ago!) we thought that would be plenty for going every other year and staying in a 1 BR. Well, now we are mostly going every year. Plus, we have family who we enjoy having come with us, so now we sometimes want a 2 BR. So, we keep working around the number of points we have, but for right now...we wish we had more!!

I keep thinking OK, when the kids are older, we wouldn't want too many points...and then I think, nah, we would just be able to go more often.

Lots of other priorities for our $$, but I do wish we had bought in the 200-range, and I keep dreaming about a 50-ish point addon at some point.

I'm probably not the most helpful of people as I'm in the UK so we tend to come out for a minimum of 2 weeks at a time, 3 weeks if DH can get the time off from work.

We've owned 265 points at BCV since 2002 and that's allowed us to have a 2-3 week stay in a 1 bed every other year now the kids have grown we have changed the way we use our points and often come out for a week at a time twice a year so have added on 250 at CCV giving us 515 in total, this gives us plenty of flexibility.

We have 1410 at seven resorts, most thru resale, and just bought 275 at OKW because we currently only have 18 there and love it. We will have 5 diff use years and 5 membership accounts but it’s nevrr been a problem. We always stay in at least a one bedroom. We go for two weeks in March. 10 days to aulani in may. And my husband and a friend go to vero beach for 5 or 6 nights every march for spring baseball. And we often go for a week right after thanksgiving to see Christmas decorations. We also get days for friends occasionally. If we are going on a cruise out of port caniveral we will often do a couple nights at vero beach before.

We mainly hang out at resort. We might go to three or even all four parks in a day just once during a trip. Although the maintenance fees are high we feel like we get the value out of our points. Since Dec 2017 through March 2019 we booked 71 days in total. We have never used on a cruise or traded out for RCI because that is just not good value to us. We also do at least one Disney Cruise a year and last year did two, one in the summer in the Caribbean and the transatlantic in the fall.
