How many points do you need?

So I like to look at the resale listings from time to time and dream. DH and I have 170 points at BLT and ideally would like to add on about 100 more. That would get us 2 vacations a year in a one bedroom, possibly a third in a studio for a quick trip. I saw a resale for 770 points. Who needs that many points? Truly, do any of you have that many and actually use them vs. renting them out? How long do you go for? Wouldn't it be amazing to winter in Disney? OMG, I think I found my new retirement plan!

There's a thread somewhere on dis about the 1000 point club.

You can certainly use the larger points allotments quickly in 2BR+ accomodations, or vacation 4+ times a year, and/or invite family or friends....

Until then, I'll just dream like you...

Never enough points! We've had several years where we've burned through over 400 points. We always have extended family with us so they go fast. I need to learn how to be stingy and not invite anyone else.

We have 545 points and want to add on about 200 more. 700 points would let us vacation for 16 nights a year in a 2 bedroom, with maybe a few points left over for a long weekend. When you stay in 2 bedrooms, the points are used up very quickly!

LOL - seeing how many points the larger accommodations use make me grateful that my DD is still young enough that we can stay in studios (although to have a full laundry setup in the room would be soooooo fabulous). :thumbsup2

Even with trips that are without DD's we will always use at least a 1 bedroom, we love the space. Trips with them require a 2 bedroom even though there are 5 of us, DH likes to get up in the A.M. and have his space in the living room without kids sleeping there.

We just used 328 points to do a 6 night 2 bedroom at BLT which required us to use all 2009, 2010 points and borrow 8 from 2011, we like to stay a min. of 9 nights but did not have the points or time this up coming Feb. Thus we added on to BLT when they had the webinar another 125 points! It is addictive.

We only own 180 points and for now, that will have to do as two of the three kids will now be in college.

But, with this, we can go for our typical 6 or 7 nights a year in studios and 1 bedrooms. Our plan is to split stay and do 1/2 the time in the studio and finish up the rest with a 1 bedroom. With just 3 of us, this will work.

We have some extra points, 62, that we can use to supplement the 180 over the next few years to ensure we get in our yearly trip.

Eventually, I will add on another 25 points, putting me at 205 which would also allow a fall weekend trip every other year.

We have 335 points but could easily use 770. I wouldn't want to pay the dues on 770 ... but our recent Disney travel demonstrates that we could consume those points if we had them.
  • 2009 UY Travel
    • Dec 2009, 1 night in 2BR at Saratoga Springs > 27 points
    • Dec 2009, 7 nights in Treehouse Villas > 243 points
    • Jan 2010, 2 nights in Studio at Wilderness Lodge > 33 points
    • Jan 2010, 7 nights in 2BR at Boardwalk Villas, Preferred View > 267 points
    • Sept 2010, 3 nights in 1BR at Grand California > 126 points
  • 2010 UY Travel
    • Oct 2010, 7 nights in Grand Villa at Saratoga Springs > 527 points
    • Jan/Feb 2011, 8 nights in 1BR at Boardwalk Villas, Boardwalk View > 263 points
The average between these two years is 743 points/year. I could burn up the excess with getaway weekend to Disneyland Resort (either GCV or the Disney Collection Hotels). However -- my DH really want to try Adventures by Disney and an account of 770 points could be quickly wiped out by ABD travels!

We have 755 pts at OKW and are always using them up each year. With taking grand parents and other family members we have not had a problem using them up. We have been going two times a year and will try to continue this other the next years we hope. We have continued to stay longer each time and that also uses up all our points. We have at least a one bedroom and stay from 10-14 days on each trip. Will be home in just 6 days for a two week stay at OKW. Can not wait to be home.:dance3:

We have 350 and we could easily use another 200. Can't afford another 200 but could definitely use them :lmao:

I had heard all the stories and dismissed them. The dreaded stories about staying in 1br and then 2br accommodations and not being able to "go back."

I can now fully attest that those stories, while evil and scary, ARE TRUE!!! :rotfl2:

Spening 10+ nights in a 2br eats up points like crazy!!! If we could "go back" to 1br or, can't believe I'm saying it, studio accommodations, we would have plenty!! Alas, DVC spoils us which was their evil plan all along :rotfl:

We have 400 points. Now that most of our kids have left the nest (we have 6) we have transitioned to using the OKW studios for two trips each year of 12 nights each and still have a few points to bank each year. We know that as the grand-kids get older those points will begin to shrink.

I am thinking of buying 100 points to start off cause i can borrow from next years and get last years i was told so 300 for this year. its only studio that I need .

I have 150 points and have managed one 5 night trip in a 2BR each year for the past 4 years. This year, I am taking a 4 night trip in May and making my first stay in a studio. In October, we are doing a 5 night stay in a THV and I still have 82 points left from 2011:lmao: So, I can do another 4 or 5 night stay in a studio next year (4 nights only cost 54 points at SSR:thumbsup2) Do I have enough points?? Well yes they work for now. Could I use more points?? Heck yes and I will have more some day, but right now, I make due with what is paid for and save for the add ons later...

This is us as well. We have 350 (200 SSR and 150 AKV). Three years in a row of bringing extended family and staying in 2BR has killed us as far as our points go and spoiled us as far as room size goes. We were going to add on another 100, then DH says, 100 just won't be enough, so we just added on another resale 150 at SSR (still in ROFR stage). Anyway, in another month after we close, we will have 500 points. We are a family of four DD10 and DS12. We love the THV's and plan on staying there frequently on our longer stays over the next few years because now instead of family, it's "mom, can we bring a friend?" In Nov. we stayed in a studio for 3 nights as a surprise for DS's b-day, and were miserable being so "close" in such a "small" room at VWL. Don't flame me because I know it's not really small, but after 2 BR and THV's, it's small to the kids! We are officially "resort (insert appropriate word here... vacation...1 BR... ) snobs" and NEED (not want) at least 1BR's from now on. :rotfl:

Sounds just like us. If we have more than 3 of us, I will not use a studio and we never have that small of a group on a disney trip.

It's easy to use up that many points! I manage to use up all of my 1,250 points myself every year, and haven't needed to rent out any of my points (yet).

We spend about 32-35 nights at Disney in a 1-BR.

We have 530pts and use them all. This year we are only going for 12nights but it's using all of our allotment. We normally do about 20nights/yr at WDW.

We could easily burn through 770 and more! LOL But we also stay in 2bedrooms since there are 6 of us.

I have 160points and clearly need to add on at least 40 points...40 would make me stop borrowing...and 100 would putme where I need to be...

:)We have 450 (300 OKW, 150 BWVs) and I can't remember the last time we stayed in a studio. When it is just my DH & me, we want a 1br. (Yes, you do get spoiled.) When we travel with our DD, SIL, 3DGC, it is always a 2br and then there's always extended family. My desire is to add on another 50 pts. at BWVs and that should be all we will need (for awhile:laughing:).

Lucky you someday when we retire it will be my goal to have home resort at all my favorite properties! Although DH and I always wanted a motor home bus and stay at FT Wilderness for 1 -2 months a winter, so many choices! lol For now we are going to enjoy dvc!
