Hoping some of you experts can give me a rough estimate on how many pictures I can get on 8GB memory card if I am shooting RAW *AND* JPEG with a Nikon D3000. And I've heard there are places around DW you can drop off your memory card and they can put the pics on CD for you- does anyone know where these stations are? Has anyone used them? What was your experience with it? Thanks!! :cutie:

I haven't used any of those services because I personally process all my images.

If you're shooting RAW+JPG, you may find they won't be able to put the RAW images on a disc because their system isn't set up for it. At best, you might get the un-processed RAW on the disc. I usually carry multiple memory cards and a netbook computer when I travel to have some place to download my images to.

On my 10mp Pentax I get 367 RAW+Jpeg images. I have not used the services because I have heard they are very expensive! I bring a 15" laptop with an portable external hard drive plus about 5 8gb cards.

there used to be a place near the entrance of the park at MK near the right on mainstreet... I was tempted on a trip to do it once but they were very expensive and it made more sense to just buy additional memory chips. Not to mention if you are going to have them copy 8GB of data that will be about a dozen cds.

i get about 400 pics on my D90 with Raw+jpeg fine on my 8gb cards.

For the price it is just easier to buy a couple extra cards. figure how many cards you think you need then double it but don't open the package or loose the receipt then return the un-used cards after vacation. it will take a little but of standing credit on your cards but give you the security you need to take all the pics and not break the bank.

Okay. I have two 8MB and two 4MB for 4 days there...I think I'll be taking an insane amount of pics (the whole reason behind going solo..so i can take my time). Is this enough? Can you buy extra memory cards at the park? I do have a laptop I could bring...for airline purposes, can I just shove it into my regular carry-on luggage in a case, or does it technically HAVE to be separate? Thanks everyone, I really appreciate all the help! ;)

You can put your laptop in your carry-on, but it has to be out to go through the scanner.

Okay, thats what I was thinking. Thanks a bunch!! Still wondering if I should just shoot RAW and skip JPEG all together.... or just buy a few more memory cards lol

Jpeg doesn't chew up that much space, its the RAW that will. I prefer to let the camera do a Jpeg and RAW only because my computer is very good at doing thumbnails of the Jpeg but doesn't do the RAW... so for being able to get a quick look to find what I'm looking for the Jpeg works better for me.

I don't know about your camera, but on mine you can reduce the size of the jpeg. It will save some space, but like the others said, it's that RAW that chews it up. If I know I will be emailing/posting photos on sites like Facebook, then I shoot RAW (full) and jpeg (med).

8Gb of data will go on two regular single layer DVDs...

I've found shooting RAW+JPG is redundant. It's like having two copies of the same image. I keep a copy of Adobe's Lightroom in all my computers, so I can view and do preliminary processing of my images in my laptop or netbook before I get home.

Depending on the age of your camera, it is possible to get small applications or plug-ins that will allow you to view your RAW images on your computer. I have a plug-in that allows me to view my RAW images on my Windows 7 64 bit machine with no problems...

Yeah, I use Photoshop so I can see all the RAW images, but I like having the JPEG so I upload them to Facebook quickly and then take my time editing the RAW later. Thanks for your input everyone! Greatly appreciated!
