How many pets would you consider too many?

I went to petsmart this morning and saw the two sweetest calico kittens! I am in love. I was originally going to get one more in a few months... BUT, will having three cats/kittens and one dog be to many? I feed both my dog and cat a premium diet and take them for checkups every sixs months. So the new kittens would get the same deal. Right now my cat who is 7 months old stays at home all day while my dog goes to daycare on weekdays while I work. The dog gets to let all his energy out and we still have "playdates" with other dogs on weekends.(Even though he is 7-8 He's one active boy!) She is really filled with energy so I think another kitten or two would be good for her. I do feel bad that we'll be moving to a bigger house soon and she'll be even more lonely.

Question is: Is having three cats wayyyy to many?

I have 4 dogs and 1 cat. I am the wrong person to ask, our saying is there is always room for one more. ;) :goodvibes

I don't think so, as long as you can give them all good care, and they don't take over your life.

One is good with me :thumbsup2 I couldn't deal with any more than the one I have, they'd have ME crawling up the walls.... But if you are a patient person with an awful lot of room, then, I guess it could be okay.... wouldn't be for me though, I know my limitations!

I have 2 kittens 1 dog 3 kids 1dh a new baby on the way and I'm thinking of getting another cat. One more wont take up that much more room right ;)

For us we reached critical mass with 3 cats. Suddenly everywhere you looked there was a cat. I don't think I'll ever have more than 2 again.

For us, the answer would be 5. We have a beagle mix, Chihuahua, mini pug and are looking to add a teacup Chihuahua and a great Dane to the mix.

A good friend has 7 cats and she loves them all. I didn’t even know for years she had more than 2! Her house in no way smells like cat.

...uhhhhh..you are talking to a person who has 2 cats (had 3 but had to put our 20 year old to sleep last week :( ), 1 hamster, 2 anoles (lizards), 2 cockatiels and 9 parakeets.. :rolleyes1

When I first read your thread title, I thought....3 cats and a dog, that's too many for me! Then I actually read your post and thought oops. I have three cats (9, 7, 4) and a dog (8)....to tell you the truth, I'm on 'zero pet replacement policy' now. I have so much cat hair and dog hair everywhere it's ridiculous. I have to find someone to either stay with them, or to leave them with, if we want to go away. Maybe I'm just getting old, but I just can't deal with 'em all some days!!!
When the cat eats my flowers, or the dog throws up on my bed...you know the drill. Man, I can't wait to be a pet empty nester!!!

I have 1 cat and 1 dog......it's fairly peaceful, but when they get crazy, and the kids with them and everyone is chasing everyone else...........well, I am then glad that's all we have. But most of the time, I want another dog and another cat......haven't ever had more than 1 cat at a time since an adult. I've had two dogs at a time, and that was fine.

I'm the wrong one to ask. We have 2 dogs, and 2 pairs of kitty siblings. The older cats are almost 8 years old and the younger ones 3 years old. I love them, but don't love the shedding. I'm more of a cat person and don't have any desire to have more dogs, however I'm always having to resist bringing another cat or 2 into the mix. I volunteer at a no-kill cat shelter so I often see some wonderful cats that need a home.

I say go for the 2 new cats. Your kitten would enjoy the company. :)

We got up to 5 once with 3 dogs and 2 cats.
Tooooooo many. 85% of the care and clean-up fell on me, and then everybody else in the family was continuously puzzled on why Mom was so cranky about it.

We only have 2 dogs now. We are on the downward slope of the pet population index around here.

At the moment we have 1 dog and 3 cats, but at least one of my cats is pregnant, so we will have kittens soon. Of course, in our case the cats are barn cats as we live in the country, so we aren't overly bothered by the increase in population. They are great for keeping the mouse population thinned down around us, not to mention the rabbits, moles, etc. :lmao:

Now my sister may have gone past the reasonable level, she has 5 dogs, 7 cats, 3 snakes, 3 hermit crabs, 4 lizards, and 2 horses at last count.

The furbabies (see siggy below) are an awesome lot. They all get along great and enjoy each other's company. For that reason it is not overwhelming. We were just lucky. Now, my aunt has 2 dogs and they wear me out. They destroy her house, scuffle with each other and are not overly friendly. I wish I was back home when I visit them :confused3 .

For us - I also say one - two tops.

We have one but I say one and a half because my son's girlfriend's dog is here a lot. When they are here together and on Sunday's, my son "babysits" while she works. Guess who really baybsits and does most of the work?

I am probely a self proclaimed expert;
We have: 3 cats (was 4), three fish, two hermit crabs and two hamsters and are getting a dog

My ma; 5 cats, 3 frogs, a fish and a stray that lives on the porch.
