How many parents have vaccinated for meningitis?

Dh and I got it. My two older kids also got it but they got a different version then they give teens. It fights the exact same kind of meningitis, but they use different additives, etc. We all got it before travelling to East Africa during rainy season (when meningitis reaches near epidemic status in some areas there).

My brother and I have had the shot, as have all of my cousins. It's a very important one to get. And if your son's planning on going to college he's going to need it. No colleges allow students to enroll in classes unless they've had the shot, whether they're dorming or not. It's a horrible disease and college's are being very careful.

My aunt died when she contracted meningitis around 1964. She was around 20 yrs old at the time. I don't remember much of the details because I was about 6 at the time. I did remember hearing they put her in a glass case in the casket for her viewing.

A local college student just died here last month from bacterial meningitis.

I plan on my dd getting it before she goes off to college in 5 years. My grandmother had baterial meningitis in the early 1980's. It caused brain damage and she was never the same after.

It does not protect against all strains. However, some protection is better than none at all.

I agree that some protection is better than no protection. About 15 years ago I went to a store and was looking at the diapers. A lady was standing there picking out diapers too. I guess she needed to talk to someone because she told me that her 6 yr old daughter died of meningitis the week before. She had a high fever that got worse. When she got to the hospital her brain was like jello. She said there was nothing they could do.

That conversation was haunting. Last year I took my 11 yr old and 16 yr old and got them the vaccination. They have also had Hep A, chicken pox, and all the others.

Two of kids have gotten it My dd when she was 11 and my ds when he was 14. They had no problem with the shot

Both of my kids had this vaccine before they went to college, no problems with it at all.

I know of 2 college students who died within a year of each other at the same college. Absolutely wonderful promising young adults. Very, very sad. I'd go with the vaccine.

In the UK babies have the MenC shot around 4 months as part of thier immunisations.

If we ever get the OK to get the immunizations (from docs) this would be one of them I would first give. I've worked with too many deaf kids due to meningitis. And we had a scare at one of the colleges I went to.

i'm not sure what shot it is they give over in the US, but yes, babies can have the MenC shot

That may be true in your area but not where I live -- I also have many friends with college students and we have pretty much found the shot to be voluntary across several different schools/states.

can small children have this shot?

My kids got it at ages 4 and 6 BUT only because they were going into a high risk situation (an area with a high rate of meningitis) as I said in my previous post. Insurance won't cover it, because it is not on the regular schedule and it is expensive. We had to have our county health department order the children's vaccine because it isn't typically stocked.

I wish I could. One of the question our ped. asked was about history of neuromuscular diseases. Since DH had guillan-barre syndrome in early 2005, she didn't want to give DD the shot in 06, or again this year. She said there is a small instance of side effects in families with this history, and she wants to get more information before she gives DD#1 the shot. Hopefully before DD goes to college we will have it ironed out.

That is a good Dr. IMO since the majority of Drs. don't ask about family history of autoimmune diseases and just give the vaccinations which can have serious prblems later.

DS just had his 13 year checkup and the Doctor recommended this vaccine... so DS got it along with his Flu shot.
