How many cards do you own and actually use? (Please don't count the 8 meg card you got with the camera that you have not used since day 1).


What are the cards? Type? How many Gigs?

Do you prefer 2, 4, 8 or 16 Gig cards?

With the price coming down, can you see yourself storing cards as we once stored negatives?

I want to go to France next year for 21 days and I don't want to bring a laptop. I was thinking I should buy another 10 cards or so to have enough.

How do you store your cards? Do you have a card wallet?

Right now I have 6 4gb SDHC cards, but I don't really think that would be enough for an extended vacation. They are so cheap--if you plan on going away for 3 weeks to France without a laptop, I would buy more. I bought 6 4GB cards to have for a normal week-long trip (to Disney or something similar) and I still planned to bring my laptop with me.

I will be going to DC in April and based on the amount of photos I have been taking on daily outings (like to the zoo or wherever) I figure, I can get around 400 (give or take, don't know the exact number) RAW images on each card. I will probably use a card each day...therefore for a 21 day trip, I would need 21 4GB cards, plus some extra for wiggle room. Here, that would probably end up costing me almost $500 in memory, which if you ask me...is NOT cheap. For you, if you can get more of those $10 Lexar cards and use them sparingly, you may be okay.

I dunno, I just think I would be uncomfortable A. buying that much memory knowing that it would be SO MUCH more than I need regularly and B. not having some method of backing them up while traveling for that long.

I currently have and use 7 cards and they are:

Kodak 1 gb SD ( my first one when I got the camera)
Polaroid 1gb and 2gb SD cards (one each)
Sandisk Ultra II 2gb SD - one
PNY Optima pro 2gb SD 133x - one
PNY Optima 4gb SDHC - two

I keep the cards not being used in my camera bag in their individual cases in pockets designed within the bag just the size of most little cases that come with the cards. I think there are a total of 8 spaces with the bags "card wallet" so I dont have a separate wallet for memory cards.

I especially like the PNY 4gb cards since I started shooting sometimes jpg + raw. I have held off buying anymore since I am looking to upgrade from my Nikon D40 to the D300 and that takes the CF cards. I dl my pics to the hard drive and to dvd and then format the card for reuse.

My next purchase storage wise is going to be an external hard drive.

I have 3 cards that I can lay my hands on, all compact flash and all 4 gig. Besides those, there are another two 2 gigs around here somewhere...

For the D80 I like the 4GB cards- 2GB cards are fine for the D50- use jpeg fine/large. I bought the 8gb card because it was $13 from newegg.com- couldn't resist.
When we travel I always worry I won't have enough and I don't bring my laptop because in Europe we move around a lot and its hard to lug a lot of stuff. Our 1st trip to Italy with the D50(1st trip with only digital) I had the 2- 512's and a few 1GB cards of my own(they were expensive at the time- on sale I got 2- 1GB Ultra 2 for $60 each) and I borrowed 2 from a friend that I didn't end up needing(mostly because I had pinched a nerve in my hip the day before we arrived and was much too lame to go out of my way to take pictures for the 1st 5 days of the trip
I think I have enough cards for a 12 day trip to Europe but I'd probably buy a few more 4GB ones if we go again this spring, just in case.

I have four cards that I use.

I have a 8gig SD card in my son's W30. I have an 8gig SD card in my G9. I have a 16gig SD card and a 16gig CF card for my 1DM2. I haven't purchased cards for the 5DM2 yet. I'll probably pick up a couple of 16gig or 32gig cards for the 5DM2 before my next big outing. I'm still trying to get a sense for how much capacity I'll need for one day with that camera.

I have several 4 gig CF cards that don't get used much anymore. I also have several cards that get used for non-photography purposes - a 2 gig SD card in our Wii, a 1 gig MicroSD card in my wife's Blackberry, and a 1 gig MicroSD card in one of my GPSes.

In SD cards for my D50 I have 7 2GB and 4 1GB, though I didn't use the 1GB's very often.

For my D300 I have 2 4GB and 2 8GB. I also have a 1GB micro SD card for my phone, a 512MB CF card for DW's cheepo digital camera and also a 512MB CF card for my older Canon Powershot S30 (though it gets rarely used).

I'll probably end up getting at least 2 more CF cards for my D300, maybe some faster cards once the summer comes and I do more continuous mode shooting.

On trips that are 2 nights or more I will also bring the laptop and download at night and also so I can see the images better.

For our Olympus 1030W, we have 3 4gb micro-SD cards that we use with an XD adaptor. We have yet to manage to fill one card, even on our weeklong honeymoon when that was the only camera we had. Each holds around 900 images at the highest resolution.

For my new XSi, I have one 16gb SDHC card. It holds just over 1000 images when shooting in RAW, or about 700 if I shoot RAW+jpg at the highest jpg setting. Considering that I took ~250 photos at the zoo today, for a week-long vacation without the laptop to download to nightly, I would add at least one more 16gb card, possibly two. I would also likely buy a wolverine photo drive to download images to - much smaller than a laptop, but would let me avoid traveling with more memory cards than I can fit in the card wallet.

At this point, I think I'm pretty good on memory, and I adore the 16gb card. I do not, nor do I think I ever will, plan to store cards like negatives... although I do need a better photo organization system.

For my D40 I use a SanDisc 2gb Extreme II and a backup 1GB store brand that is rarely used.

I have yet to travel without my laptop so this is more than I need for one day. If I were to travel without a laptop I would consider getting a few more 2gb cards. I feel better having 2 2gb than 1 4gb in case of a data corruption or loss of the card itself. I would by know what to do if I lost a trips worth of photos, but I would feel better if I still had 4 days worth.

For the DSLR I have 3 4gb Extreme III sd cards (great black friday deal)

For the S3IS I have 2 1gb Extreme II sd cards

Ah, someone else got the Black Friday deal. I picked up three 8gb Extreme 3 cards for $5 (total) after rebate. I decided not to get greedy and go for the free-after-rebate 4gb cards too, but if they appear again before the rebate ends, I'll probably do it. My father just picked up three 4gb Extreme 3s from Abe's of Maine but they were just under $10 after rebate due to shipping costs. I thought about it but couldn't justify spending even $10 for 3 4gb cards.

I have seen some of them appearing on for-sale sites, people got them for, oh, less than $2 each and are selling them for $35+ each. That seems like a bit of a gouge, but whatever.

Anyway, those are my three main ones in rotation for my K20D. The K100D is has my old primary card, Transcend 8gb, and there's a slow-writing PQI 8gb class 6 that may do duty in our Fuji F40 (if it can handle video being written to it fast enough) or a second card for the K100D... then there'd, I think 2-4 4gb cards, and there were at least 5 2gb cards at some point but I think I sold or gave away a couple. I don't even count the 1gb or smaller cards.

I had been planning on maybe picking up a 16g before our trip (two weeks and 10 hours away!) but the deal on the Extreme 3s was too good to pass up.
