How many hours per day do you have your boiler on for?

Boiler is an old term for the device that produced the hot water/steam needed for heating (think they mostly use heating oil or natural gas). Modern houses all have a thermostat to cycle the heat/air conditioning on/off based on the temperature. Newer systems mostly use forced air and run on electricity or natural gas. Maybe in a very old house would you ever need to manually turn it on or off. Depending on where you live and hot/cold it is outside, the HVAC system in modern homes will automatically cycle on/off as necessary to maintain the preset temp.

It does not get turned off once it's on for the winter. Thermostat set at a temperature and the boiler will maintain that temperature. Might bring it up or down one degree or two but that's about it.

It's 4 degrees Fahrenheit here this morning (or about -15C) so we keep the heat on 24/7! I think we turned it on in mid-October, set to 60F, and will keep it on constantly until some time in April. After that, it'll go to 55F and we'll turn it up in the evenings or as needed. We shut it off (it goes down to 50F) in May and don't fire it up again until sometime in September.
Thanks goodness we converted from oil to natural gas. In Jan-March, it could cost as much as $200 in oil every week to keep the house at 60F!

We walked through northern Spain this fall, and we noticed many places we stayed only had their heat on in the evening for a few hours and then turned it off (say, 7-11). Also, the heat was not central but came from a radiator without vents in the room.

Given the cool, humid/rainy weather and lack of vents, that meant the room was very cool and clammy most of the time. A real problem if you washed clothes and had to let them air dry (as we had to do in most places due to the lack of dryers).
