How many honestly do this?

Hardly anybody bathes before jumping in a pool (much less showers poolside) and I would not swim in a pool, period. A public hot tub, you'd have to hold a gun to my head. It's basically the equivalent of taking a bath with strangers. You're marinating in their sludge. Nasty!

This is how I feel about public pools as well, which is why I never swim in them. People pee in them, blow their noses in them, etc and to me that is just gross. :crazy2:

If other people want strangers bodily juices on them, go right ahead. Not me - uh uh!! :upsidedow

Same here. I have never used a shower before a dip in the pool or hot tub. Ever.

Include me also. I've never thought to do it. I'm with the other poster. If I'm on vacation at Disney, I'm most definitely using the public pool. Some things I have to have a little faith in. I work with the assumption that Disney maintains their pools properly and that the other guest maintain some basic level of cleanliness. Not going to start freaking out over hotel pools and the water parks.

I use the shower by the pool if I have sand, dirt, grass etc. on me that I need to rinse off before getting in the pool, otherwise I take a shower in the room before I go to the pool.

Honestly, no. I rarely shower before getting in the pool. If I am dirty/sweaty/have hair product on, they yes, I will shower quickly in my room before getting in the pool. Otherwise? No. I am a fairly clean person.

Pool germs don't bother me. Disney pools are chlorinated and it's not like I drink the water or anything. In fact, I shower more AFTER swimming than before. A quick rinse and I'm good to go. Same with water parks. I figure I'm on vacation... I'm not going to let germs in pools worry me. I'm a fairly healthy person... rarely get bad colds or the flu. My immune system is exposed to a lot (I work retail and in a hospital w/ kids) and it has served me very well. I'm a huge advocate of hand washing, which is the best thing you can do to fight virus/infections, but other than that... I am fairly laid back.

I do live with some "germaphobes" though, so I understand those who take more precautions than I do. It just isn't me.:goodvibes

Ever buy a soda pop at mcdonalds, disney, burger king, your local restaurant? You just swallowed more bacteria in one drink than you will in a lifetime of swimming in pools.

I just find the irrationality of germaphobes bothersome, sorry :goodvibes . Especially on here, I dont understand where all this comes from considering the world we live in. There's been so many shows on this kind of thing. Its fine if you're a germaphobe, but just say that and that you let it inhibit your life, dont try and say its rational. Drives me crazy. Its a disorder, look it up. Mysophobia. Almost all doctors reccomend treatment for it, not trying to tell others crazy things and make them become one. I never read about people who are affraid of heights preaching to others about how they shouldnt go on high things, why do germaphobes always go on about this like their fear is any more rational than fear of spiders, heights or people?

Sorry, rant off. Its not really all directed at you kitty, but it comes up now in every single thread from someone. They didn't go through the hassle of naming it, listing symptons (including avoiding things because of it, ie: going in the pool) because its a valid behavior pattern.

I'm not a germaphobe and I'm not irrational. I'm a registered nurse and I know public pools are dirty places (and public hot tubs are :crazy2: ).

Yes, I'm sure there are plenty of bacteria in fountain sodas ( the daughter of a co-worker used to inspect soda fountains for the health dept, and she said you would NEVER drink fountain sodas if you saw how gross the fountains were!). But I doubt there is the volume or the virulence of bacteria in a soda fountain that there is in a hot tub. And I doubt soda fountains have fecal bacteria in them like pools and hot tubs do.

Remember, when you jump in a pool, you are getting the water all over your body and in every orifice. A friend of the family's ended up with herpes encephalitis (brain infection caused by the herpes virus) that his doctors think he caught in a pool.

LOL Ditto!! :crazy2: I saw Caddy Shack with the Baby Ruth in the pool!!

So you don't go into the pools at wdw?

During one of my stays at POFQ, very early in the morning, 5:00am ish or so, I've seen the CMs cleaning the pool. It was drained and they were in there with brushes and whatnot. I can't swim, so I don't use the pools anyway, but my DF and DS love to use the pools, at Disney or anywhere.

I could see showering before you go in the hot tub, if you had just gone in the pool, etc.

I usually use the showers after the pool, to get some of that chlorine smell and feeling off.

I doubt the shower is there for any health reason.

I wouldn't be suprised if soda fountains DO have nasty stuff on them. How many people do you see that don't wash their hands after using the restroom? All it would take is for the employee to try to fix a clog on the nozzle, and there you go!:crazy2:

As far as the pool go, they are treated. It is not like you are jumping into someone else's bath water. A doctor can think your friend got sick from a pool, but that is not the same as knowing.

I can't help but wonder, don't any of you people ever swim in a lake or the ocean? Talk about full of germs!

I love the way you speculated that soda fountains DO have fecal matter on them (um, "that's not the same as knowing" back at ya :) ) and then dismissed what a PHYSICIAN said about how our family friend caught herpes encephalitis.:rotfl:

Anyway, I was using the herpes encephalitis as an example of a disease that could be spread in a pool. By far the biggest danger in pools is diarrhea-causing organisms that come from other people's fecal matter. I don't blame you for not wanting to educate yourself about this--it's gross and I can't recommend that you Google "pools" and "diarrhea" if you ever want to step foot in a pool again. Ignorance is bliss!

Re: lakes and the ocean, Florida has some lakes that are contaminated with brain-eating amoeba that thrive in the warm water, and I know many people have been sickened by red tide in the Gulf. There are still some relatively clean places to swim, though. I'm generally not worried about bacteria in general, just concerned about places where the concentration of bacteria can make a person sick.

I realize a stream of water doesnt kill germs and that they ask you to do this...:confused3 I disagree that it does little for cleanliness. A long day of being hot and sweaty at the parks with all of the sunblocks, hair products etc. creates alot of materials that could be gently washed off quick. Not to mention if a little is washed off from every person multiplied by the hundreds who enter. I think it makes a difference.
Well, no, it won't. A real shower, in the room, with soap will.

I take it you all never swim in the ocean?

Doctors used to think leeches were a good idea; people used to think the earth was flat. Heck, my doctor thinks the little empty space in the back of my skull is what causes seizures.

Okay, tell you what - if you can document exactly how effective the poolside "shower" is at keeping diarrhea-causing organisms out of pools, I will educute myself further. There's no soap involved; the person 'showering' is clothed (at least in the areas most likely to harbor such organisms). So, how effective can this stream of water POSSIBLY be in the situation you present?

They have showers down at the shore, does that mean I have to take a shower before I go into the ocean?:rotfl2: I usually use the showers after swimming in pool or ocean to rinse of the salt & sand or chlorine:thumbsup2 .

Why are you quoting me (in a completely unrelated quote)and then asking me the above?? (Must be because of the empty space in the back of your skull?? ;) ). I don't in any way think that a poolside shower will keep bacteria out of the pool. I agree with you that only a real shower with soap in the room will do so.

By the way, doctors STILL use leeches (they're used in wound care)

I did not read the whole thread- do they have you shower if you go to the water parks? I have never seen signs for it at parks i visited, just wondering......

As for the fountain sodas, thats quite the leap you're making. If you drink from them, you're probably exposed to fecal matter. Somehow I just dont think every person washes their hands and those get washed RARELY at a lot of places, I know its supposed to be done daily everywhere I worked and most did, but I've seen some at other places and they are so filthy some of the pop has actually created a new layer of 'plastic'. Luckily I dont mind too much because life is too short.

Remember, when you jump in a pool, you are getting the water all over your body and in every orifice. A friend of the family's ended up with herpes encephalitis (brain infection caused by the herpes virus) that his doctors think he caught in a pool.

As for fecal matter, its on your toothbrush and on your countertops nearly 100 percent of the time. It comes from the air. In your estimation, what are the chances of getting sick in a hot tub compared to say getting hurt driving your car? Maybe you should take the bus everyday because accidents involving public transit are far lower.

About your friend, thats awful. I read there's an extremely high mortality rate so I hope he was OK. Their doctor seems to be at odds with everyone else though that seems to think that virus spreads through sexual contact and the exchange of body fluids.

I know things in the pool can be bad for you. You could get something similar to food poisoning. Its unlikely though. Its really really really unlikely actually. Its so extremely unlikely that you die as a result from a visit to a pool that you probably have a better chance of winning the lottery multiple times. If you're going to avoid doing things that have that chance of harming you, start writing the list and building the bunker.

I've always showered before going in any pool, even the pool at our house (when we had a pool) because my hair and swimsuit absorbed less chlorine if they were already saturated - or rather, it was easier to get the chlorine out, whichever way you want to look at it. If I didn't have my hair saturated first, I'd end up with straw for the summer season. I would get in the swimsuit, hop in the shower, then head for the pool.

That being said, I haven't been in a public pool for years.

OK, so here is how taking a shower before entering the pool will help you.
My hairdresser told me that your hair will get much less damage from the chlorine if you shower prior to entering. The reason is that the hair shaft is somewhat sponge like. If you compltely saturate it before entering the pool it won't absorb as much of the pool water.

Edited to add: UMMM I think I need another cup of coffee, somehow I missed that fla4fun just said basically the same thing just before me. Oooopsy.
