Hi,

I'm new here and thinking of purchasing through DVC resells but wondering how many points it would take (approximately) to use them for a disney cruise? Does anyone know if there is a website that would provide more information on this subject? Didn't see this discussed on any threads. Thanks much....

Yeah! WDW in 11 days!

Lots and lots. Many members will rent out their points and use the proceeds to take a cruise.

You can do it (we took the 4 night in 2001, when it wasn't quite so high), but it's not the most economical use of points. I think it took all our current year points, plus we had to borrow a lot. We went out and got two more 100 point contracts after that.

We're paying cash this time and using the points in Jul.

The points needed for the cruise have a wide range based on stateroom category and date of the cruise and length of the cruise.

I don't have the current point chart in front of me right now but a Cat 11, 3-nite cruise would range from about 62 points (pp/dbl occ) to 114, Cat 6 would range from 119 to 187 and Cat 4 would range from 154 - 229.

4 nite cruises range from 76 - 245 (based on Cat and date) and 7-nite cruises range from 123 - 371 (cat/date). Point costs for 3rd/4th passengers are also listed or cash may be used for those passengers.

The point needs have changed each year- usually increasing - but did seem to stabilize this year compared to prior years.

As noted, many have rented their points and used the proceeds to pay cash for their cruises.

Enjoy!

We are using some of our points for a cruise in Feb 2008. You are suppose to be able to book 24 months in advance, but it is kind of useless because you can't book because the point charts for 2008 have not been released.

It is a pretty big "waste" of points but we got an "extra" year of points when we bought so we have some banked. Better use em then lose em!

Why do people think that it's a "waste" of points?
Compare the cash price for a trip with the number of points needed to secure the same through DVC. I'm guessing you'll find that you are getting $5-$6 of value for the DVC points. These same can easily be rented for $10 ($13 if you have a premium location reservation during peak demand).
