I killed a squirrel today...or he committed suicide on my car. He fell on to the top of my car, then onto the front of my car. I thought it was a piece of wood at first, then I saw his body writhing and flopping around in the street behind me. Just as I realized I'd have to go back and run him over (which I was not looking forward to) he stopped writhing. :(

I almost cried. Every time I kill an animal, I am heartbroken. My husband goes out and shoots them on purpose and enjoys it and I don't care a bit. But when I kill one without trying, it sinks my mood for the day.

This brings my total roadkill to:

One cat
One raccoon
One bird
One squirrel

I think that might be too many dead animals for one person in 22 years. Am I over the average?

You, my friend, have balls of steel. I don't even think I could do that.

Two cats. :sad1:

My friend ran over a mama raccoon and all her babies. She said she heard them all thumping under the car. Thump, thump, thump, thump. It was horrible. :sad2:

I've been driving for 42 years and am pretty sure I've never killed anything yet. I May have hit a cat once but I never found him/her. My guardian angel was surely looking out for me that day because when I saw it start across the street right in front of my car, I swerved into the oncoming traffic. Lucky for me there weren't any cars right then.

I've seen other people hit animals. It's a terrible thing to witness. :(

It's really horrible and I just get sick to my stomach when thinking about it but I've hit a rabbit, a quail and a snake. I want to point out that none of the killings were intentional.

I feel so bad for you. That would break my heart to have to go "back". I killed one squirrel in my life. I felt awful. I think the fact that you have killed more might make you a better driver than me. I tend to brake for anything that moves in the road. That isn't a good habit to develop. I remember leaving work when I worked in Hartford. I was waiting to exit onto the main street when I saw a pile of feathers move. I pulled my car out, blocked the traffic and picked up a blue jay who was in shock. I wrapped him in my sweat shirt and brought him home. He recovered in a cage for about 2 hours and flew away. I figured that erased the squirrel.

My first husband ran over our OWN cat. $1000 and one less eye later, he was fine. The cat, not the husband. :sad2:
My dad ran over one of our dogs and several years later, my brother ran over my grandma's dog. One made it, the other did not.
Animals should stay way far away from our driveways.

DD would be thrilled if you all hit squirrels. She is scared to death of them :confused3

I have hit several animals over the years, raccoons, opossums, birds, and squirrels. Thankfully, no deer... but have narrowly missed a few.

(oh, a couple of cats- our own barn cats too stupid to get out of the car's path..... not on purpose though.)

Had to put my dog down. I lived in the country near the highway, and found the poor guy when I got home after work. someone had hit him and left him near my driveway.

Also had to hold my German shepard when she was given the shot. She had terminal cancer and was not going to make it to the next day.

Sometimes pet ownership is not fun.

The second day I had my driver's license, I ran over a squirrel. :sad1:

A couple of years ago, a baby fawn ran UNDER my car - yes, it was wierd. She ran under from the side. I could feel her kicking and writhing in pain under my car. She was stuck. A man who was driving behind me actually pulled the poor thing from under my car. She took off "running" into the woods. Well, 2 of her legs were just flopping everywhere; she was dragging herself, trying to run. It was so sad. I was bawling crying. She was covered in blood and obviously not in good shape. The man got a shotgun out of his truck (I live in the country) and shot the poor thing to put her out of her misery.

This happened about 50 yards from my parents' house, so practically everytime I go to my parents, I think about that poor baby.

BTW - I'll never be able to watch "Bambi" again! :sad2:

So now that I've depressed everyone...

I've killed a bird, numerous huge insects and a rabbit. The rabbit really annoyed me though. I was on the way to work and saw a turtle crossing the road. Since it was going slow, I decided to stop and help it to the other side of the street. After getting him safely to the other side, I got back in my car, turned down the next street and ran over a rabbit. I can't win. :confused3

I've never hit an animal with the car. BUT we do have squirrels commit suicide in our pool a lot. We have a huge tree right next to the pool and the branches go over the pool, the squirrels tend to fall off and land in the pool. Now we leave the ladder in year round so they can climb out if they fall in.

Do bugs count? If so, I am a mass murderer. :confused3

OP, I'm sorry that happened to you! :grouphug:

Kind of ruins the squirrel's day too.

My road kill is
2 chipmunks in Vermont (They ran in front of the car and there was nothing I could do)
1 pigeon (I didn't do it on purpose I thought that he had already walked in front of my car. Then I was yelled at by someone who came out of the restaurant, about how horrible I am, and how was I just going to leave him there. I didn't even know that I had hit him.)
I felt soooooo bad about it.
Thought I hit a bunny but I got out of the car and didn't see him anywhere so he must of been ok.

I hit a bird in my college dorm parking lot. I thought he flew away but I saw him in my rearview mirror and he evidently didn't.

I actually burst into tears!

that's how the tortoise beat the hare in the story as well

I hit a cat once but it ran away. Not sure what happened to it but I could not catch it.

I also hit a squirrel once years back. It broke my heart. I have a 'thing" for squirrels. Gave a baby one mouth to mouth with a straw once. Baby squirrels are about the sweetest little things on earth!
