Just curious if anyone knows if the new carry on restrictions implemented today are an indefinite thing that we can expect for months (or forever) or will it only last as long as the security level is at its highest? I have no problems with these new restrictions...I want everyone to be safe, just looking towards our next couple trips coming up in the next few months. Thanks

Personally, I think these new restrictions may be permanent. Obviously, the threat never really goes away.

I have no problem with it, as long as it helps to keep me and my family safe.

Why not just ask us what numbers will be drawn for lotto next week?

Some of the changes will probably be permanent. Reduced amounts of carry on luggage with some items continuing to be banned.

They are reporting 72 hours, but I'm sure it will be longer!

I don't mean to sound sarcastic but, why would anyone ask this question? Obviously, the world has changed-and not for the good. How can the restrictions ever be lifted??!! It's not like the threat is just going to magically disappear in a couple days, weeks, or months. I am sorry if I sound angry but I have read some pretty STUPID things about this whole subject today!!! I am not one who usually rants and raves-especially on this board but people need to wake up and realize we don't live in the same world as we did 5 short years ago! Gettin off my soap box now...

Unfortunately, it is sad but true that our world has changed. I feel like people will once again be allowed to take beverages on board airplanes as long as they take a drink out of it in front of TSA agent. That's what we had to do after 9/11. Of course, there might be some technology that uses water, coffee, soda, etc. to make an IED. In that case, it may never be allowed. I don't know about that and don't really want to learn. However, I may not have a choice because I'm sure the media will inform us and all terrorist wanna be's how easy it can be done, if it is possible.

I'm just thankful that this plot was foiled before any damage was done. Sounds like the security measures that have been instituted since 9/11 are working even though they can be frustrating to us at some time or another.

I know .... people really need to get past the "inconvenience to me" mentality and deal with the new restrictions.

If you listened to Chertoff's statement today, you would hear he said these restrictions would hopefully be temporary until certain, more secure screening methods for carry-on baggage are implemented. They have explosive detecting screening equipment for the check baggage. My guess is they have to install and test similar equipment for the carry-on screening. Once that is done, thses restrictions could very well be lifted.

I don't see them going away anytime soon. How many of these security measure they started after 9/11 have gone away?

As the OP, I did not intend to sound as if I was complaining about the inconviences, in fact I would rather they have extra security measures all the time. I asked the question just to be informed....and actually some of the security measures they implemented after 9/11 have gone away...they even reported that on the news today!! So, I dont mean to be sarcastic...but some people need to just chill out and let people ask a question that may be important to them! Off my soap box.... And thanks to all those that actually helped me with my question!!!

Some previously banned carry on items may now be taken onboard, such as knitting needles, nail clippers, blunt nosed scissors, etc.

Who knows? It's on a par with the usual questions of "what will airline ticket prices be in June 2007", which are usual here.

Perhaps some people think posters here really do know everything, :confused3

Or Perhaps some think the use of the boards is to ask and discuss questions they may have and hopefully have people who have the answer or an opinion answer them. I kinda fall under the theory that if you didn't like the OP's question, you probably should have rolled your eyes and moved on instead of trying to make her feel stupid or selfish. She asked a simple question that probably 90% of the people that are traveling in the near future had. Stepping down......

The Soap Box is getting used a lot on this post! :rolleyes1

I wasn't directing my comment to you ~ I'm sorry I didn't make that clear. I didn't think you were complaining. Actually I probably should have posted on one of the other threads about this subject ~
Sorry ...

One does however have the right to askhard questions of this administration.

Example.

Current regulatons : you can't carry liquids into the secure area. So you buy a drink from the burger king in the secure area.

You can't bring the drink onto the plane - even though you bought it in the secure area. So the TSA doesn't conser the drink secure.

What does this mean to us ? That there is no screening of the goods and personnel at the shops in the supposedly secure area?

I don't know about you but the very method they are using shows that the moniker "secure" area is false and that makes me very nervous. There is a way to get plastique to someone in the secure area .

Am I whining or pointing out the Emperorer is wearing no clothes?

Hey CP's mom,
Thanks for the apology...ya know after I wrote that I wished I hadnt...I am just having a rough day and a couple of replies rubbed me the wrong way. Normally I could care less if someone doesnt like my post, as I know I dont post anything inappropriate, etc... I need to take my own advice and just chill out too! Once again, thank you to everyone who gave me their thoughts on my original question...I know its pure speculation, but that is what I was looking for!
