How long to paint? How much to buy?

We're doing dd#2's bedroom in a Mickey theme. (See, this is a DIS appropriate post.:lmao:) Her room is 10'1" X 11'8". We're doing the majority of the wall red, with a thick black border around the top (the width of the area above the windows/doors), and yellow buttons on the black border. Basically it's going to be a giant pair of Mickey pants.

How much paint do we need, and how long would it take? I'm actually thinking of doing it on a day by myself and surprising dh with it, because he never gets off his behind and actually does anything. Stuff will just sit on the honey-do list forever.

That sounds ambitous and I don't think I could do it in one day. If I'm reading your description right, you will need to do one color then tape a line to paint the other color. You will have to allow the first paint color to dry before you can put tape on it.

Painting red will require multiple coats. I have several red walls at my house and I HIGHLY recommend using a tinted primer. I painted my walls before they had the paint and primer in one, so I don't know if that will help the speed up the process. I still think it'll take atleast 2 coats of red.

Good Luck and post pics when your done. ;)

Are you doing the WHOLE room red or just one wall? I think with red - it will take a lot of paint (and probably a lot of coats). I think I also read somewhere that if you use a primer with a brown tint, it will help it be 'red' and not pink.

I think it sounds cute - but personally - I would just do one wall red with the black border. I look down the road and to repaint that would be a nightmare. And that is a LOT of red in a room.

Make sure you post pics when you are done!! :goodvibes

Red Paint. :headache: Plan to use tinted primer, or you won't be happy with the results. If it's a real mickey pants red, you need to plan for AT LEAST one coat of tinted primer and two coats of paint, with at least 12 hours to dry in between. Red dries more slowly and covers worse than other colors because of the pigments.

My family room is red (it's called geranium) and it took 2 coats of primer and three coats of paint.

Ditto with the black. You are going to need tinted primer and multiple coats of paint.

If you want to tape off to do the extra colors, it is going to have to be completely dry in between coats or you won't get a good neat line in between the paint colors.

There is no way this is a one day project. Likely, not even a one weekend projects.

Darn. Thanks for the honest replies though. I guess it will eventually be done. We might have a college-aged girl with a brand new Mickey room at our rate though!:rolleyes1

You know there are vinyls, even HUGE Mickey vinyls! I personally wouldn't go through all that work. I agree with PP, doing it is going to be a nightmare, going over it one day another nightmare.

I have to be honest. That color scheme sounds awful and the room will be really dark. I'm not sure what you described is going to look like a pair of pants. To each his own though. I agree that there is no way you can get this done in a day. You will need several days to let the paint dry between coats and for the different colors.

Personally I would go for a light color on the walls and use removable decals. There are some really nice ones that don't mark up the walls when they are removed. Then when your daughter gets tired of the theme room, you won't have to spend a week trying to cover up all of that dark paint.
