I've been sitting on the exam table in my doctor's office for ab hour.
When should I give up, get dressed and leave?

I wouldn't want to have to go through that all again, so I would stay. BUT, I would be sticking my head out the door to ask someone how much longer and that I had been waiting for over an hour.

This has happened to me...I used my phone to call the front desk. When they answer just say "hi, this is >>>>>> in exam room 4. I've been in here for an hour, any idea when the doc will be in?" Said very pleasantly. I was amazed how quickly someone showed up!! :)

:thumbsup2 my vote is to try this.

That is so frustrating!!!!!! I dont know how much longer I would be sticking it out!

You should ask the DIS doctors to diagnose you, and then tell the doctor what we said.

What are your symptoms?

Oh, 40 minutes ago?

Plus, I send them a bill for my time waiting past 20 minutes without any explanations from their side.

I just don't have the time to wait around just because. IF the nurse comes in and says, "Hi, we're so sorry, but Dr. Y had an emergency with a patient and we expect him/her in XX more minutes, would you care to reschedule?" then I wait and don't charge them.

And yes, my doctor's office charges me when I skip out on an appointment without cancelling.

I like that!

It really depends on the doc and how hard it is to get an appt. I've waited 3.5 hours at the OB/Gyn, some of it in the exam room. It is so hard to get an appt I just stayed put.

Good luck!

I've only ever waited for my OB that long if she was delivering a baby. Her office is small (in the hospital) so you can generally hear what is going on. If no one bothers to explain, I always left.

Also curious if Handbag Lady has ever gotten her bills paid.

I waited for an hour and a half at my son's pediatrician office the Friday before Christmas. I didn't have my phone, though, and just played with my son oblivious to the time.
The pediatrician himself walked in apologizing profusely for making me wait (I had to ask what time it was!) and explained he'd had to admit 2 kids that morning. I forgave him because he obviously felt terrible and I hadn't even really noticed, plus it was an emergent situation that had kept him.

Then the lady who checked me out said "I made your follow-up right after lunch so you won't have to wait." I said "It was pretty long today." and she goes "Well you had an appointment on a Friday before lunch, what do you expect?"
Totally undid all the kindness I'd received from the pediatrician himself. I just don't understand nasty people like that.
Besides, I'm a SAHM with no life. She has always set the appointments for me and I show up whenever she makes it. Witch. :sad2:

Brilliant!

...also wondering if Handbag Lady ever got paid for waiting.;)

There was once a man who usually refused to see Doctors, but did so this one time b/c of some trouble he'd been having and sat in the exam room, waiting for the Dr to come in. After 45 minutes of waiting with a no show from the Dr, the man proudly and aggrevatedly walked out, exclaiming to anyone and everyone who would listen at the check out desk that his time was just as important as the Dr's and he refused to wait any longer.

6 months later, he was dead.

All because he refused to wait. The Dr may have found the tumor that day and saved his life.

That man was my father. My children willl never know their Grandfather.

I know it's hard to wait when schedules are tough and time is short.
But please- it may save your life to wait just a *few* minutes longer.

Last year, I had a raging sinus infection and my regular doctor wasn't in her office so I was referred to a walk-in clinic. There were a few people in the waiting room but it certainly wasn't packed. I filled out the forms and settled in to wait. There was a TV in the waiting room and the chairs were comfortable so I wasn't in any big hurry. After about 10 minutes, I was called and taken to an exam room.

After the asst. took my blood pressure and temp she said the doctor would be in very soon. I sat on the exam table for about 20 minutes and it became very uncomfortable. My whole face hurt from the infection and my head was pounding. So I moved into a chair that was in the room so I could lean my head back on the wall. Another 20 minutes went by...then another 20 minutes. I could hear people in the hallway so I decided to stick my head out. I very politely said, "Excuse me. I've been waiting in here for an hour. Do you know how much longer it will be?" The asst. in the hallway nearly took my head off. She said, "Ma'am! There are people ahead of you! You'll have to wait!" Needless to say, I was not thrilled with her attitude! If it was going to take that long, I would rather have waited in the waiting room where it was more comfortable. The doctor came in pretty quickly after that and saw me for less than 2 minutes before he diagnosed my sinus infection and gave me a prescription. That was not a fun experience but I definitely needed to see a doctor.

I have to wait like this almost every time I see my oncologist. I've gotten to read some great books in the past 2 years with these regular office visits.

At one hour, 5 minutes, the doctor poked her head in the room and said she'd had two extra patients inserted into her schedule. She'd only be 5 minutes longer. 15 minutes later, I was starting to get dressed and she finally came into the room, apologizing profusely. I decided to stay because her appointments are four months out.

This is a mid-life GYNE center, so it wasn't like she was off delivering babies. She knew I was p.o.'d and apologized again at the end of my appointment.

I really like her or I'd never be going back!
