With all the rules now ....need to quarantine when we return to Canada, need to quarantine when arrive at US, need to get covid tests before airport, no vaccines for kids under 16 at this point (and I suspect cruises will require one to get on), how long do you estimate before us Canadians can actually take a trip to Disney World or go on a cruise? This assumes no quarantine on either side and vaccines here.

I know our August plans are toast, and most likely our Dec plans (one of our kids is turning 12 so no vaccine option yet, the other is turning 16 this year). Is March 2022 toast too? Are trips out of the picture until 2023 or later? I am managing with the lockdown in Ontario and having to stay home (makes weekends more boring, but it's fine), but really treasure our family trips....and Disney and cruises (we do Royal) are the best vacation for us.

I know no one really knows but what are your thoughts?

They are testing vaccines in kids now. So it’s very possible that they may be authorized for use in kids 12 and up by the fall.

I don’t think there is anyway we can guess when things will change. It’s possible once most adults are vaccinated cases will drop so drastically that we can start to get back to normal. Or we may have to wait until kids are vaccinated too.

I think the measures in both countries will start to be eased once a lot of people are vaccinated. I think they are being put in place as a temporary measure until things get under control.

We are hoping we can go to Disney in the fall. But we are prepared to have to postpone again.

Thanks for the reply. Yes true...and glad my younger one is turning 12 as I think that age group they are testing (cut off).

I agree...as more and more people are vaccinated and cases drop, I think they will remove these restrictions (which I guess relates to my question as that is probably the "when" we can go to the US for holiday.

Yeah, would love to be able to go on our Christmas cruise but am thinking it won't happen. After 44 days of vaccinations, only 1.97% of Canada has been vaccinated. At this rate, plus the shortage, I think it'll be awhile before things return and trips are possible....which is why I am questioning if it will be further out into 2022 or even later.

I have a cruise booked for December that my son would be turning 12 on, and I'm worried we won't be able to go on it. I was going to make it a B2B but haven't done anything since I am not sure we'll be able to do any part of it.

I also have one for end of January 2022 that I am more hopeful for since after kiddo turns 12 I am hoping he'll be able to get vaccinated. I know we'll be on the cruises I have booked for end of April 2023. And if that Jan 2022 is still a no go, then I may hope for something later in 2022 as well.

We cruise (Carnival mostly but also RCL and the Jan one is MSC to try) and do Disney. We went to TO last summer for an over night to go to the zoo. We will probably do that again this summer, but it's not anywhere near the same. The only benefit is I can carry over my vacation, and I'll have a lot of it banked. I am taking some time off but it's not what I would be if we were going on a trip. Working from home, not having to drive, or deal with people face to face as much (I am very much an introvert) means I don't get burnt out as fast at least. When we can travel, oh we'll be going on a TRIP let me tell you!

Winter is boring, weekends the worst. My son has been making me go play with him in the front yard, he has me chase him around in the snow. I don't like the cold but at least it gets us moving a bit, and there is no one else around so it's safe. Other than that, he doesn't leave the house (his choice). I have no idea what spring/summer will hold for us. Having a trip to look forward to gives me hope. Winter I would be looking forward to getting some place warm, but this year that isn't an option. So, we make do. I'll be very happy if they let the waterparks open this summer, at least we could do something on the weekend. Not as fun Disney or a cruise, but something. We didn't even go swimming last summer because they didn't open any of the fun stuff, it was basically just lap swimming and kiddo wasn't interested.

I am all for the restrictions if it brings this back under control. And we won't travel until we can do so safely and without adding 4 weeks to the vacation. I did read something on CBC that said Christmas should be a more normal celebration in 2021. But that masks and social distancing will be in place until "herd immunity" which no one can even say when will happen.

I am really really really really hoping we can go in March 2022. I am so missing our March 2021 pre-planning and dreaming. My daughters will be 6 and 8 though so it will be a while until they can get vaccinated. If a vaccine is a requirement to fly without quarantining it will be a no go. I have all my fingers and toes crossed. I figure at SOME point in 2022 we should be able to go - so even if we need to push our March trip and do a summer or fall trip instead I am okay with that.

hdrolfe - I hear you...last summer we lost our Disney World/short cruise trip. Instead we went to one of those cottage type resorts. It was nice to get away but no where near the same. And lol...I too am an introvert and totally fine working from home (but the online school is definitely not good for my younger one). Exactly...I love the planning and having something in the works. I count down daily as it's something to look forward to....but hard now as don't know if they will actually happen. As for leaving the house, I can go a week or two now without going outside. My son even commented that he hasn't been outside since before xmas break (we have exercise equipment in our basement). Just want things back to normal but most of all, want to be able to have these special vacations while our kids are still "young-ish".

I know...we lost March 2021 too, and have had that booked for a couple years. So disappointing. Crossing fingers and toes too. Let's hope good results with the vaccine for kids in the near future.

One of the biggest factors will be what level of transmissibility exists for those who have been vaccinated and contract the infection. if it is less than 10% of what it would be for those unvaccinated then with some ongoing precautions for those who are vaccinated things should open up by this summer. If it is a higher rate then significantly longer.

I have not heard an update on the transmissibility analysis, but hopefully later this spring we will know

Exactly. If the vaccine drastically reduces transmission I don’t think we will need to have everyone vaccinated to see a big difference.

True we should start seeing a drop in transmission once the vaccines roll out faster and more get poked but i for one don't want people to let their guard down or decide they don't need to get vaccinated because "enough people have". My hubby is high risk and because of that he hasn't been anywhere other than a few medical appointments and one crucial visit to a client. We both miss grocery shopping as a couple. I'd also like to be able to have some form of contact with my dad since I haven't seen or even talked to him since boxing day 2019! We were both sick off and on when we got home from Florida last January and then the nursing home locked down. My dad can't see well enough to use any form of virtual platforms so that only makes him cry and he can't hear well enough to use the phone either. He's lonely, confused and it breaks my heart.

I am so very sorry. Heartbreaking hearing your story and others similar. May things get better soon so you can visit in person and not have the fear about passing anything.
My dad passed away last year, not from covid but during it. And because of it, we couldn't be there with him during his sickness (only at the end did they make an exception). Horrible horrible.

My predictions are that we don't see the land border open up until late fall, possibly even into 2022. A bit drastic maybe, but I don't see Canada opening the border until the majority have been vaccinated. And seeing the horrible delays we're facing and the fact that right now they don't expect to even START vaccinating the general public until sometime this summer, I have no hope for land borders to open before fall.

I don't see Canada removing it's quarantine requirements before then, either. I do think the US may remove theirs this summer, since while slow as well, they're still on a much better pace than we are with vaccination.

But really, I think we're still another another year out. I'm really hoping for summer 2022.

As long as the new variants don't become dominant. I think that is their current concern, and honestly, is going to be one of the big factors on when things open up.

mshanson3121, sadly I'm thinking the same. Vaccines are behind and I think it will take longer than they are telling us. And border restrictions may be there for awhile so extra challenges for us.

After all the news today (travel restrictions and vaccine cutbacks) I'm beginning to think it will be late 2022 maybe 2023. These new variants are causing concern about getting out of this pandemic any time soon.

Yes, our provincial press conference mentioned the evidence is showing the SA variant is going to be more deadly, and there are now 5 variants being watched, not 2.

I’m now thinking going in the fall will be out. that means we can’t go until February 2022 and this is to replace our March 2020 trip 😫. I’m running out of times I can take my daughter cause she’s in university now.

I did have hope that late summer or early fall might be ok to travel again, but with all this vaccine supply news I’m not betting on anything for awhile...remaining hopeful but yeah, who knows.
