How long does it take for a resort to sell out?

Just curious how long you think it will take SSR to sell out...? What was the average time span for the other DVC resorts?

SSR is going to be the largest of all the DVC resorts and will be built over a span of several years. It's kind of hard to gauge how long it will take. OKW would be the comparison but OKW was also the original DVC back when very few people knew what "it" was. OKW took about 8 years to sell-out (prior to their building more units and selling out a second time). I'm not exactly sure when BWV sold-out. BWV opened in July 1996. My memory is failing but I think it probably took about 4 years before sell-out. My "guessestimate"f or SSR would be 5 years before sell-out. BWV and VWL sold-out in 1-2 years but are much smaller resorts.

I suppose a lot would depend on the economy improving. I called MS yesterday (Friday) to reconfirm some ressies and the cast member I spoke with said sales at SSR going quite well, and the tone in her voice was one of being obviously pleased.

Of the present DVC resorts, only OKW was completed in phases. All others were completed at the time they opened. (VB was supposed to have more phases, but that plan was cancelled.)

OKW did sell out originally in summer '98 (?) and then reopened sales when buildings 62-64 were completed in 1999.

Sales for both OKW and BWV ended in fall '00 when sales began for VWL- that resort opened for reservation at the same time.

BWV reopened sales this past spring when they sold the area that has been used for models and offices in the sales center. Those rooms will be available for use after the sales center moves to SSR. Sales originally began in summer, 1996 when the resort opened.

BCV began sales in Feb '02 and opened on July 1, 2002- sales ended there this August.

VWL began sales in fall 2000 and allowed DVC reservations in Feb. 2001. Sales were ended in Feb. 2002 (but reopened last spring until closed again in August)

OKW began sales in Oct. 1991 when the resort opened. The resort was not completed for several years with South Point the last major area to open- around 1994 (?). Sales ended around 1998, but began again in 1999 when the old sales center (Commodore House) was removed and three more buildings built-for the final phase of OKW (This phase was described in the original plans). Sales completed in fall, 2000 when VWL sales began.

HH opened in 1996, but sales began in 1995 and ended this past summer. VB opened in 1995- with saes at the same time and ended just this past summer.

SSR will be a larger resort than any of the others to date- sales began this August and the resort will open next May. Scheduled are 12 buildings. The first four should be completed by late summer, 2004 and then the remainder will open, at a rate of one per month, beginning in 2005. Sales will likely take at least 5-7 years to complete.

Stay Tuned!! :)

I suspect it will be 8 to 10 years.

Just a thought....I wonder if Disney will tie-in promotion of SSR with the people who book the "Magical Gatherings"? Once you've got the whole gang there, I'm sure you'd love to show them how to come back.....over and over again. ;)

I think that sounds likely, Pam. I was thinking something similar too.

When did BWV first go on sale? I guess when we bought in Sept., we were buying into space from the sales area because we were able to have MB. If so, why are we allowed to make ressies now, and not have to wait until those units are suitable for DVC since the people who are buying SSR have to wait?

I have no idea how I found the DISboards, I think if I had known about it, we probably would have bought into DVC a lot sooner than we did, probably in '96 when we got our first sales video, we never did the tour. This is a wonderful resource! Thank you all!

The resort opened in July 1996. Sales must have begun around that time as well since they did not do a "pre-sale".

The relatively small number of units being added at BWV are similar to when they added on to OKW. They don't have to restrict the use of points since chances are there a similar amount of points that are currently "out of use" since they are being sold and/or DVC doesn't see a problem because of the usage pattern of DVC points. They can't allow SSR owners to start using them right away because there is nothing at all at SSR to balance out their usage.

Glad to have you on the boards! I agree that the information we get here is first-rate.
