How long do you give somebody on eBay to make a payment?

I listed my iPhone 5 on eBay last night. Evidently probably too low as it sold within five minutes, LOL. They asked a question last night, which I didn't notice until this morning, so I responded a couple of hours ago and I haven't heard anything back. And I'm still wondering if they're going to buy it or not. I really want to get this sold because I am wanting to take advantage of Black Friday sale to get an iPhone 5c.... No, I don't really need to upgrade. But I just really think iPhone 5c's are cute. Please don't judge me, LOL.

Something like this I give them 24 hours, but I make that clear in the listing.

I sold an Android phone on eBay a couple of weeks ago, and never heard from that buyer...

Normally, I wait until eBay takes notice I haven't been paid (and automatically opens a "non-payment case" on my behalf), which is usually about a week after the sale, then, I'll relist.

In the meantime, while I am waiting, I send a new invoice every day until I hear from the buyer (and remind them on the sixth day this is their final opportunity to pay).

Unfortunately, smartphones are red-hot on eBay, and that brings some unsavory elements in the bidding mix.

Feedback doesn't seem to matter, anymore as sellers can't give negative ratings (look at your buyers -- they may have negative comments, but because the comment was posted, it gives a positive rating, which IMO is wrong).

If you want to get your final value fee back then you have to wait 3 or 4 days, I can't remember which to open a case through eBay. Then they contact the buyer and the buyer has another 4 days to pay. It's a real PITA

I usually state 48 hours to pay in the listing.
eBay used to make you wait 4 days before you could open an unpaid item case.

If your listing did not state that you expect payment within 24 hrs or will relist, I'd go by eBay's window, which a PP says is now 48 hrs before you can open an unpaid item report. I think 48 hrs is reasonable.

How's the buyer's feedback? That's something else to factor in before stressing.

This is my first time to sell anything, so I didn't know to put the 24 hours payment. But I sure will from now on! I guess I'll wait 48 hours. The buyers feedback was mostly positive, but it stinks that if you leave any feedback, that it makes it positive. There were two comments about the fact they never paid but they were back to back so maybe they went through a bad spell. But lately they have apparently paid for everything. They had 18 comments and 16 were good.

Does matter what you say, you can't open a case until 48hrs after and then they have 4 more days to pay.

I always put in my listing that I require a payment within 3 days of auctions end, and I send out a reminder near the end of that timeframe. I also add that if they need more time, they need to contact me immediately. I rarely ever have anyone take the full 3 days and usually the ones that do are ones I open cases on and they never pay anyways.

Did the buyer have any feedback? I also started asking people to contact me prior to purchase if they had 0 feedback or I would cancel the transaction, and this cut down on non-paying bidders for me, surprisingly. (I didn't know if it would work or not! LOL)

It sounds like you set up a Buy It Now listing. Whenever I do that with a high value item I also select Immediate Payment Required.

If you want your final value fee returned to you you need to wait 4 days to open an unpaid item case and then the buyer has an additional 4 days to pay before Ebay gives them a strike.

But even those unpaid item strikes don't mean much anymore. They never cancel ppl's accounts for it. bad for business. Same reason why sellers can no longer leave bad feedback for buyers. Bad for business.

But be sure you DO open an unpaid item case before relisting or you won't get your fee back and you will end up paying 2 fees.

Also just a question but isn't the IPhone 5C a plastic phone? And the IPhone 5 is a metal phone? I thought they made the IPhone 5C to be a "budget" plastic cheapo phone for ppl who can't afford a regular IPhone.

edited to add, you might want to check with Gazelle and see how much they will give you for your IPhone 5 because they offered me $200 for a working IPhone 4S. I can only imagine they would pay more for the 5.

Buy It Now can have different terms than Auction endings. I learned the hard way the first time I listed a Buy It Now auction. You can select immediate payment upon purchase or else the sale won't go through. Ohh and it must be paid through Paypal.

Last year I sold a new Galaxy SIII through my phone, and I didn't go through all the payment options. So some one tried to buy it from me, but didn't have a paypal account and couldn't make a payment with a credit card. After she agreed she didn't want it anymore, I cancelled the sale. If both parties agree to cancel the sale, then you can get final value fees back as well. That will go faster than trying claim nonpaying bidder.

When I did the relisting, I made sure to make all the corrections to the BIN options. It sold within a couple of days and the transaction went smoothly.

Sorry, I have no insight on eBay.

However, I feel the need to point out that going from an iPhone 5 to a 5c is not an upgrade. They are essentially identical. In fact, some would consider it a downgrade since your 5 has an aluminum body and the 5c has a plastic body.

The iPhone 5s is an upgrade from the 5.

I just don't want you to go through all this hassle and end up disappointed.

Good luck with eBay and getting some good Black Friday deals!

OP, have you sent the buyer an invoice? I always list BIN (don't do auctions, not worth it) and require immediate payment. Makes life easier.

Yes, I'm aware that the 5c is basically a 5 in a plastic, colorful shell- that's what I want. My family and I are complete Apple nerds....Some women like to buy high heels, I like iPhones and iPads.....Like I said, I'm a nerd....

I did do Buy it Now. I sent an invoice after I responded to the question mid-morning. I did just hear back from them with a couple of questions regarding the condition of the phone, so I responded and attached some pictures. Hopefully this will result in the buyer sending the payment soon. DH called AT&T this morning to ask some questions about early upgrade (yes, even though it is still basically the same phone, it's still considered an upgrade by AT&T) and the woman told DH that I probably could have easily gotten another $100 or maybe even $200 if I found the right buyer. Dang it! Oh, well----I thought I had researched my pricing, but I guess not. At this point, I'm just ready to get my money and send the iPhone and be done with it!

Thanks everyone for all your advice. Y'all gave good advice about what to do if they don't pay. I'll report back on whether I get my money or not....

By the way, liking Apple products doesn't make you a "nerd" -- just smart. ;)

Well no response from the buyer. Should I open a case or do I request to cancel? I offered way too good a deal, so I'd really like to relist it for a higher amount. What are my steps? Sorry so many questions, but we sold one thing years ago so I'm an eBay novice.....
