How Late Can You Modify a Reservation?

I know a waitlist request expires (if you choose that option) 7 days before the reservation. However, I am wondering how late before the reservation actually begins can you still modify? For example, say you had a reservation at OKW in a room not near the Hospitality House. You put in a waitlist to move to a “preferred” room but it never came through. What if the day before your reservation was to begin a room (same point value as your current reservation) became available, would you be able to modify and make the change? Or once you reach 7 days is your choice pretty well set in stone?

I just modified my stay from AKV Jambo 1Br to a 2br at boardwalk the day before check in. If the reservation you are modifying to is fewer points, the excess points will go to holding. Otherwise you are good to go.

"A Holding Account is a "parking space" for Vacation Points from a Disney Vacation Club Resort reservation that has been modified or canceled 30 days to 1 day before your scheduled Check-In date."

Your points go into a holding account, which can be used for reservations made within 60 days of checkin. Which means they can be used for that modified reservation.

You can modify yourself up until the day before check in. Day of check in it is still possible for MS to modify but you have to call in and only they could see availability. I've modified a reservation with MS while sitting at the airport waiting for the rest of my group to arrive on their flight.
