Usually when we go to florida, once we're there, we might decide to stay an extra few nights (weather depending!) at the ocean. I often end up booking something last minute, the week before we go, or even while there. Can you do that with DVC at vero, if there is any availability for a couple of extra nights?

Just curious, as I've been in planning mode all day- what fun! I can't believe all I can do with 170 points in January- wow!! the possibilities seem endless:) Anyway, I was toying with the idea of vero, but wondered if I could do it last minute or not. I'm brand new to DVC (haven't even taken a first trip yet!), and wasn't sure.

Thanks for the help!!

We decided to make a reservation for VB for June 1 and 2 right after we bought into DVC at the end of February. At that point, about three months out, the only rooms available were garden view inn rooms. We made our reservations and requested to be waitlisted for a studio. We received notification yesterday that our waitlist had been approved.

Depending on the time of the year, I could see it being really hard to get a room at the last minute. Of course, we're still new to this, so that may not be the case at all.

Last year, in May, I had a last minute trip to Florida and was able to get 2 nights, OVIR, for the next day. I assume it was easy for us since kids were still in school at that time.

Per the PPs, I think it depends on the time of year. I've tried to book 4 and 5 months out before for the end of July, and would have taken anything. Nothing was available. I waitlisted, and about 2 months prior, nothing had come through. So, I cancelled my waitlist and made other plans.

It sure doesn't hurt to try. The other thing you can do is book it now. As long as you cancel 31 or more days out from your arrival date, the points will be returned to your UY just like you hadn't made the reservation at all. The only thing you have to watch is your UY banking window, should you choose to bank those unused points.

Congrats on your purchase! I hope you have a wonderful trip in January!!! :goodvibes

DVC is truly not designed for last minute traveling. You may get lucky at some point, but overall you will not.

That is why you will hear so much emphasis put on the 7 and 11 month booking windows. The DVC resorts operate at a high occupancy level, so it is not too common to find last minute openings.

Not to say that it won't or hasn't happened....

Thanks everyone, this is quite helpful! I hadn't thought to book and cancel it a month out either, as our trips are in January with a december UY, so we have time to do that. We tend to travel during times that are not quite as busy, but who knows what will be available when we call. I could also see about cash too. I just wasn't sure if we 'could' even try that late! It seems we can!

Thank you again!!

I've had two experiences with short notice planning and Vero Beach. The first time we called member services in Feb, and were able to get a GVIR for early May. Nothing else was available. The second time, just last week, I call for early June, and nothing is available at all. We decided to go to the Poly instead on points.

Last summer....in mid June, I tried to book my ds into a room at VB. Dh, two dd's and myself were already booked in an Inn room. The dates I needed were Aug 12, 13, 14....check out on the 15th.

There were no rooms for points (I had requested OVIR, GVIR, or studio). So I booked a studio on cash (of my choices, that was the only cash option) and waitlisted for point nights. I got notification the middle to end of July that ONE of my three nights was available for points and it had been switched. MS linked the nights, so all three nights were connected on the reservation as one night for points and two for cash.

I called and got an 2 br, 2 weeks out for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.When it came time to go,we were so heart broken that we went to the front desk and extended it for 2 days in an Ocean View Inn room (OVIR)! It was spectacular! Also I got 4 days over Presidents Week in an OVIR about 1 week out. Keep in mind that we stay at my in laws while in Florida and I can ask for any clusters of days in a row that are available over a 1 or 2 week period of time. I think if you are flexible and depending on the time of year it can be done. We are going in June and I am fighting the urge to book there again. :cloud9:
