How Kneeling Became a Protest Symbol

What are your thoughts on hugging a flag? Like full on two arms, pressed close to the body embrace?

That is a no-no of the the U.S. flag code, according to the article posted above by a PP:

"The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free. . . It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free."

Burning the flag is also protected by the Constitution.

The U.S. flag means something individual, personal and different to each of us. The first amendment protects our right to those differences.

I don’t know what you mean here. The symbol of the flag or the symbolism of kneeling during the anthem?

The flag. Imzadi said what I wanted to say much better.

This whole kneeling/disrespecting the flag thing is a bit of a touchy subject in my house . Serving 20 yrs in the military, my husband has a strong view on the subject. It hurts his heart but he will say that he gladly served his country so we could have our freedoms. He also looks at it in the sense that, that is your job that is not the place to make a fuss( even though it is a highly visible place to do it) Also,he feels that if you are only kneeling for the camera but not doing anything off camera to help change things then it is truly disrespectful, not only to the flag but to the ones who are trying to make change. Me? I really don't know where my feelings lie. I'm a bit too wishy-washy. I understand both sides. Which probably makes me worse for not committing .

Kap has done a lot in addition to kneeling. Does that meet your DH's approval?

Most of the high profile kneelers were doing things off camera.

Also, the job was still being done. Kneeling before a game begins doesn't affect doing one's job at all.

I always find it interesting that people who fight for the freedoms of others have any problems with people using those freedoms. I wonder how many veterans put stipulations on the freedoms they fought for, is it a common practice?

Thank your dh for serving ALL OF US during his 20 years in the military.
Remember those who want to chastise your dh for his feelings about the flag are the people who weren't willing to do what he did. All they are willing to do is take a knee. They are so brave

Military veterans have a different way of seeing things. And, no my husband doesn't have a problem with people using any freedoms he risked his life for. If a person does things respectfully, whether he agrees with it or not, he will give respect back.
I did mention that when those( not all) do it for the attention or jumping on the bandwagon etc, that is a disrespect for the ones truly trying to make a change.

Thank you. It was the best thing we ever did! My girls are very proud to say they were Coastie brats! Even though my husband never saw combat(did come close to though). He has been in some pretty hairy situations through out his 20 yrs. There are others that have sacrificed far more than we have :)

I do thank him for serving! This is an interesting subject for me, as I find that a lot of people jump onto the bandwagon of assuming what those who served would think of such things, only to find that like any group, military are not all of one mind on it. I've always found it interesting that people took a quiet, respectful protest so personally, especially since the intent was to be respectful.

Yes they have, and that is why when someone has an issue with people feeling that kneeling during the anthem or in front of the flag should just keep their mouth shut. They have no idea why someone feels that way. They will of course assume something and most likely be wrong but that doesn't matter, they'll tell you you are wrong for feeling that way.
Don't listen to them.

Yes, people tend to put military on a pedestal. They're all kinds. From extreme right to extreme left( not really meant politically. Just from one end to another) There are good ones and bad ones. I've met my fair share of both.

Funny that the people who take issue don't keep THEIR mouths shut, when they have no idea why someone might feel so strongly that they feel the need to kneel. That should go both ways, using your logic, no?
