Overnight construction is being done on the bridge that is about 2 blocks from my house. The noise was disturbing to me so I can't imagine what it does to the people who live right next to it. There is no way those people could sleep though this. Apparently there was a mtg. about it last night, but I didn't know. They don't allow citizens to disturb the peace like this!

Would you rather them do it during the day and disturb traffic patterns and cause severe congestion in your area?

Sorry, I just think it's a small price to pay for an infrastructure upgrade that will last many many years.

A lot of the road work, bridge repair, etc. is done at night around here because the traffic during the day makes it impossible.

are at work..there is a detour route....I think NO SLEEP for days on end for the people who live there is a very high price. Some of them probably have small children/babies also.

A high price? IMHO, it's a short inconvience. Would you rather the bridge failed due to neglect?

I know around Milwaukee, whenever there is construction going on, they have planning meetings to attend to find out what's going on and to offer suggestions.

They are currently digging access tunnels to a huge underground sewer storage system in our area. They use explosives and all day long, BLAM, BLAM, BLAM. They actually gave the residents who lived close to the areas the choice to do it at night or during the day - they chose daytime.

You should see if they have these meetings in your area - then you could voice your concerns about construction that effects you or all of those small children/babies.

That's what one would normally think...but as soon as I hit a major thoroughfare around here, I gotta wonder....doesn't anyone work anymore? The traffic in these parts is horrendous, and it's just getting worse. I guess it varies region to region.

At night, the traffic is down about 75%, which is why most of the work is done during the night. That's not to say they don't do work during the day because they do...but the major stuff is done during the night.

Having lived in NoVA, I have to agree with you on this one. Horrendous is putting it mildly. I'm always shocked when I come back to visit. :)

I work a rotating shift so I have to sleep with "day" noise when I'm on midnights. There are a few things you can do that might help.

Hang some heavy blankets or quilts over the bedroom windows until the job is done. That will help keep the noise down.

Use a fan or air conditioner to block out some of the noise.

Put on some soft music that will block outside noise a bit, but not be overbearing to you.

The earplugs are worth trying, too.

Do those earplugs come in infant size? ;)

I'll take a wild guess Sonja wants the lime green!:p
