How is the food (really) at Hoop De Doo?

I thought the food was not bad at all except for the mushy corn on the cobb, yuck. We had great seats, second row from the front! It was a really fun show and my ds-9 really enjoyed himself a lot.

We ate there in 2004. My husband thought it was the best fried chicken he had ever had. The ribs were a little bland. The dessert wasn't all that great and the sides were pretty good. It is unlimited beer (which I enjoyed) but beware it's so crowded and the tables are so close together it's hard to get up for a potty break. The show was GREAT!!! I think you are paying more for the show than the food.

We are trying to decided between Hoop De Do and the Luau for Jan 2007 right now. My DD likes the WDW camping sing a long video and I think would like the HDDR also. My DH has always wanted to see it. I think the girls would like the luau too (they also love the beach party video and the hula dancing.) They will be 5 (almost 6) and 2 at the time of the we go. The food does play an factor.

Right now we are thinking HDDR and Ohannas (best of both worlds.) Threads like this help in planing. Thanks for asking, I am interested in the answers too! :thumbsup2

To the lady above, woo hoo! That is what we are doing too!

I love Ohana... my favourite...

Anyway, we haven't been to HDD and are trying it this time since we are on the dining plan. Along with CG which we probably wouldn't do without the dining plan... you can get fancy food anytime, but not atmosphere!!! :goodvibes

To convince DF it was a good idea... I told him it included unlimited beer and wine... You can use this tactic if you'd like! :rotfl:

So, it does right??? Are they stingy on the beer and wine??? We're on our honeymoon and will have Disney Transportation. :teeth:

Milissa, DH and I aren't big wine or beer drinkers. I think this is part of the reason we have never done either show before. You are paying $ for something we don't use. Still with the dinning plan I find we can do things we wouldn't of otherwise. :goodvibes (and the youngest is still free! :cool1: )

California Grill, so worth it. Especially for a honeymoon. We went once for our 10th wedding anniversary. The food was so good and the view is out of this world. Everyone should go at least once. It would of been great to go on the dinning plan and not think about the $ at all.

Since we will have kids with us this trip, HDDR for us instead. ;)

We love Ohannas, fun for everyone and good food. I think the girls would really like the luau. Right now they are watching the beach party sing along video tape and doing the motions to pearly shells. Even the not yet 2 year old. It is too cute! :cool1: :goodvibes

It really is unlimited beer. The bring it out by the pitchers. Just remember my warning about the potty break. LOL

It is unlimited draft Bud. DH wasn't happy about that at all.

We were there in May, I don't eat ribs but my BF loved them and ate the whole bucket!! I am a picky eater, and I really enjoyed the fried chicken. I also enjoyed the strawberry shortcake but I do agree that this may be one of those meals that you go for the show. I would not want to go every year to Hoop but I would do it again especially with people who have not seen the show before. It's a good experience and a night of laughs for sure. Also, if you are worried about kids eating they offer kids meals like pizza and mac and cheese, I might advise ordering this right away if you know the kids won't eat the chicken or ribs so that it comes out before or with the rest of the food.

I think the food is good. Not spectacular but good. The chicken is the best, and the dessert is right on. Not sure it's worth the 2 credits. Also the show is a riot. :woohoo:

DH and I were there Tuesday night. The salad was great, the cornbread was a little dry (honey butter definitely helped), the chicken was absolutely delicious (and hot too), the ribs were messy but good, the beans and corn were good (nothing special, but we like both of those items), and the shortcake was okay.

Overall review: We gave both the show and the food a solid B. We liked the food, and the show was good but we're not going to be among the "repeat" customers. It was fun to do it once, but we won't be heading back.

That being said, it was about a THOUSAND times better than the luau, both in terms of food and show quality!!! :teeth:

gone 2 or 3 times, and will not be going again. To us the food was edible but not great. A lot of it was overcooked-like the corn- or undercooked- like the fried chicken. Ours was red it was so undercooked. Got new but it was dried out. Gave up on the chicken and ate the ribs, which were dry, even with extra sauce. Our table location was terrible. I guess because I made the ressie about 3 months before-not in the year long window that was the norm then.( this was several years back)
My DH does not want to go ever again...so we are trying all new places this time. We really do not need to be entertained while eating anyway. The grandkids are our entertainment! princess: pirate:

We have taken our boys several times. Not many options for 3 boys who wouldn't do a princess anything. They always requested it and we always had a great time. We always found the food to be good--we expected BBQ type food and that is what it is--not fine dining. I think its like everything else in WDW try it once and see what your family thinks.

Couldn't agree more. We haven't been for several years, but the food is probably just average, the show is what makes it fun. DS(27), DD(33) and DD(25) are too old to care when they can break free to join us at WDW, but DGS(5 & 2) will be joining us for HDDR sometime in 2007. Great show for children, don't go for the food, though. If you want to go for the BBQ food go to Whispering Canyons. Very good and still fun. Also only 1TS. Like everything else it's a personal decision. Have a great time whatever you decide.

:wave2:

My whole family loved it. :thumbsup2 I would say you are paying 2 TS for a combination of the food/entertainment. The show is super fun and the food is yummy but pretty simple. It was worth it for us to try and we will probably go again.

Just want to say thanks for all the replies! :)

I still haven't decided what to do. I really like the idea of spending some time at FW - having dinner there, a hayride, maybe do the marshmallow roast that night... It sounds like a lot of fun! But I am worried about the food.

I'm debating going to Trails End instead, or even Mickey's BBQ because DD might enjoy that more because of the characters. :confused3

*whines*
I do NOT want to do this show and waste 2 !!! of my TS credits, but I have no choice. Not looking forward to this. No offense but I don't like country music, I don't like audience participation. I'm not going to be happy at all with this am I?
I'm going with my best friend's family. I was allowed to plan the whole trip and for the most part decide on all meals :) So, I'm being a total brat complaining about this as Alfredo's and HDDR are the only meals they requested! ugh!!!

Ok now i know this is stupid but i LOVED the bread aand butter!!! The butter was a honey butter type and I can never find anything here like it in NY. If you live in the south it was much like RYANS butter. If it went to one credit i would go for the buterr. :rotfl2:

The show was good, I ate more of the salad then the rib and i don't care for strawberry shortcake the way they made. I would go back but not every time i went ot disney, since i am going in feb with ds we are not going!!!!

(But please send me butter! :rotfl: )

I think we are going to do it. From everything we read here and other places it is much better then the Luau and DH wants to do a show. DD says she does 2 so we are going to fork up the 2 credits. Personally I would like to do CG or some other good meal, but with the kids I think a show would be better. Plus we are going for a week and if you eat all the food on the DDP you come home 10 pounds more then when you left (even with all the walking.) ;) :rotfl2:

Thanks for all the help on it. :teeth:

Oh I don't suppose anyone knows what they do for food allergies? My youngest is allergic to milk and eggs. I keep hoping it won't be an issue by then (Jan) but more then likely it still will be. It seems most foods should be ok for that (chicken and ribs). No honey butter for her though.
