How is the DIS bankrupting you?

Great thread! I really disliked the Frog Togs, too. I don't think we bothered with them after the first day. I'm still figuring out how to make the packing cubes work best for me. Last trip and the next few, we'll be splitting or time between Universal and WDW. So I'm thinking one color for the first part and another color for the second. My husband thinks it's ridiculous how much time I spend planning.

The first trip we took after I joined the boards was probably the worst we've taken. I really got caught up in wanting to try everything and it was just miserable because we had no down time. We even had the deluxe dining plan. Granted this was back when there was still a pint where you would come out ahead without too much work. But I thought if one character meal was good, one a day would be awesome. This was also the first big vacation we'd taken as a family of five (one was just over a year). I've learned a lot about how we like to vacation as a family now and it includes a lot more down time.

Things I've bought because I read about them here and I actually use a great deal outside the parks:

Vera Bradley - the small mail bag is what I use on the weekends. Lots of pockets and card slots and it fits everything I need
Dooney and Bourke - used mostly for work. I don't carry a big bag on the weekends
Birkenstocks (had a pair back in college but hadn't worn any in a couple of decades). Bought a pair because they were recommended for the parks. They are my go to sandal now and I'm considering a new pair because my middle daughter keeps borrowing them. Or I'll buy her her own pair so she leaves mine be.
Pandora bracelet - I don't wear much jewelry, but I like this one.

I really want a sparkle skirt! I also really want a Vera Bradley or a D&B, but currently I have been trying to resist!

Lots of Disney t-shirts for all of us - specific ones to wear in certain parks - that's where packing cubes help with organization, lol! Even delved into the Family Matching T-shirts last year - so cute! I should give you a link to my friend's designs, @PrincessWithABlaster - she is both Disney and Star Wars obsessed and she's has a fairly big following. I wore one of her Haunted Mansion/Star Wars mash-up tees last trip and so many CMs were commenting about it!

@horse11 is very knowledgeable about the Disney bounding - she has a cool thread about it, although that could send you down the rabbit hole!

Disneybound - Recently learned about this here and it is robbing me of time and money... and I'm loving it!

Body Glide - Learned about it here and now I use this outside Disney, too.

Packing Cubes - Already had these, use them all the time when we travel.

Skecher Go Walks - This was a bust. Got some, but don't think they have enough support for all day walking (bad feet), so I guess I'll just be wearing them to run errands.

On our last trip, I absolutely bought SO many things I learned about on here. This time around my only new purchases (thanks to DIS) are Bobble water bottles and HOPEFULLY packing cubes. I haven't been able to add those to the budget just yet, but I'm hoping to before we leave in 4 weeks. :)

I found Disboards in the first place on a search for good park shoe advice! Two pairs of Keens, a pair of Clark Morse Tours and a pair of Jambus later, I think I am set. (Though truthfully I have another pair of Keens on order because they are the GREATEST SHOE EVER!)

I bought a whole mess of skirts (really! 5 skirts - but they were $7 each) and my SIL gave me 4 sundresses that weren't working for her. Chafing is an issue for me (lucky OP), so I got some slip shorts that I am pretty excited about (and they were buy one get one free).

I am trying Frogg Toggs for the first time this trip, but we cut our towel in half - so maybe it won't be as bulky? All I know is that I surprised myself by how badly I reacted to the heat last time and the misters don't really do it for me. Moleskin and Body Glide were already a part of my heavy walking repertoire.

Disneybounding - ohhhhh, the temptations! Initially, I had planned 12 different DBs (for an 8 day trip - costume changes!) involving lots of crafting, dip-dyeing, jewelry purchases. It's turned into sewing two sashes and making some bandanas and a string backpack out of some of my husband's Star Wars sheets (most of this being completed by my SIL.) But have you seen the Swarovski Alice in Wonderland collection? ::swoon:: I was ready to buy some custom ears from Etsy, then reminded myself that headbands give me headaches.

I might be the only one that I haven't really bought anything suggested here?
Before my first trip I read the unofficial guide and that is how I found out about the dis. So I already had a good grasp on things.

I am the over organized, over planned person why else would I buy a guide before the vacation right ? :teacher:
So I already owned packing cubes, but perhaps my favorite is the bag-all bags for shoes, boots, laundry.

My athletic sandals only come out my closet when I am going kayaking or rafting, just like my hiking boots. I grew up in Colorado surrounded by people who did this sports so I knew about it. I just don't really like the look of those so I don't wear them to the parks.

I think my Disney shopping problem haven't gotten any worst except that since I don't wear my Disney clothes in my everyday life I normally end up forgetting what I have bought or have and buy more than I really need :rolleyes1. Don't tell DH.

I think if anything the dis have save me money with great tips from the budget board and threads about places like park savers. :worship:

This is funny. Since signing in to the DIS and planning our first trip in 2014, I have purchased/done:

- cross-body bag - loved this in the park. DH wore it most of the time and now says he'll wear it for the whole upcoming trip. He also uses it when he bikes or when we have an outdoor event. I'm glad we're getting a lot of use out of that one.
- tie-dyed shirts for us all - I saw a few trip reports of families wearing matching tie-dyed shirts and fell in love. I thought DS would really love to do this so I bought a bunch of dye and more shirts than necessary. it turned in to me doing all of the shirts alone and having to give them out to other family members b/c DH would only (begrudgingly) wear one of the designs I made for him. (he said the other looked "too pink") DS couldn't have cared less :)
- so. many. SW shirts. and SW socks. and SW headband for me. (I don't wear headbands)
- (a buttload of) pins for trading, lanyard - thankfully DS really liked pin trading
- booked extra ADRs for "must try" places even though we were there during free dining i.e. spent a bunch OOP
- an emergency kit for the park (cross-body) bag

I even remember questioning myself about DS's potential need for a stroller for our first trip ... he was 7. :rolleyes1

I'm still trying to figure out why I took the advice to bring glow sticks, because me and my sister looked silly being 19 and 18 and pulling out the glow sticks to keep us from buying the light up swords at the park (spoiler: we still bought the swords, while we were wearing the glow bracelets).

:rotfl2: I literally laughed out loud when I read this. People in my house asking what is so funny and I can't explain because they just won't get it anyway.

In the grand scheme of things, joining the Dis has saved us money, in a way, because I found out about discounts that I never knew existed. And we already stayed at the BC for most of our trips, so that didn't change. But - we also ended up buying AP's and taking more Disney trips to get our money's worth. So on the one hand, our trips are cheaper now but we take more of them. It has been fun, though. ;)

The only thing I bought that I saw here was the Frog Togs chilly pad thing. Hated it and threw it out after the trip.

Sounds like some of y'all need to step away from the DIS! :D

Awesome thread!!

I have become a Vera fan after getting a hipster last trip- so that was a great find!

I've started a list of items for next trip- and frog Toggs and body glide were in there lol, but now I am rethinking the Toggs ha ha!

Now I'm curious about these packing cubes things- are they mainly for living out of your suitcase on vacation? We unlock everything in the room dressers etc, so not sure how helpful they will be?

And now I am logging off to research sparkLe skirts and bobble water bobbles - ha!

Disney provides a unmatched magical and Pixie dust experience. It about marketing, the same as any business. So .......NO Disney is not bankrupting anyone. Individuals choose what they want to buy!

AKK

I am pretty sure the OP wasn't being serious :)

I completely forgot about Disney bounding. I don't do much - just choose colors that might bring to mind a specific character - like a dark purple top and black bottoms for Ursula. I have pretty long and thick hair, so it's always back in a ponytail when I'm at Disney. Hot Topic sells incredibly cute hair bows for many of the Disney characters. I bought several a few weeks ago. My youngest is really into princesses right now so I thought she could wear them, too. Then she found a pair of cuticle trimmers and hacked the hair off the right side of her head (when I was cooking dinner). She now has an odd sort of pixie cut. The bows attached to alligator clips, so they might work in five weeks if her hair grows out enough.

Still, the bows at Hot Topic are very cute and I spent a silly amount of money (I did at least have a coupon code and shopped through ebates). I wouldn't advise shopping on a work computer, there's a fair amount of NSFW stuff there.
