ok i had to do a report on tarantulas ( ewwwwwww:scared1: ) and now i feel like stuff is crawling all over me :scared: so anyway tell me what you think!

Are you afraid of tarantulas? Because they look creepy, most people automatically assume they are dangerous and deadly. Once you find out more about them they aren’t quite as terrifying anymore. They are actually pretty interesting creatures!

Tarantulas are large, stout, hairy spiders. The sizes of tarantulas vary; they can be as small as a fingernail to as big as a dinner plate. They are the largest of all spiders and are usually dull brown but occasionally brightly colored. The average body length is three and a half inches long and with an average leg span of five inches.

The history of the tarantula is also very intriguing. The tarantula got its name from a species of wolf spider in Taranto, Italy. People used to believe that a tarantula’s bit caused a disease named tarantism. Apparently, victims would run and leap about. The only way to cure the disease is to dance the tarantella which is a crazy and hyperactive old folkdance. Superstitions say the “dancing sickness” is how the tarantella dance resulted.

Tarantulas live chiefly in subtropical regions and in sandy areas as well as rainforests. Tarantulas feed on beetles, insects, and some even eat birds, frogs, lizards, and small mammals. They live in holes called burrows during the day and come out to hunt at night. They hunt by slowly stalking, then pouncing on their prey. They then bite the creature and inject them with venom, turning the insides of the organism into bug soup. They then slurp it up- yummy.

The tarantula has many useful defenses. They can break off hairs and fling them on a target causing extreme irritation of the skin. They also have a vicious bite, and can run exceptionally fast. Tarantulas have strong fang-like structures containing poison, but their bites are not deadly to humans and are no more dangerous than a normal spider’s bite.

Tarantulas have a simple body on the inside. They have an open circulatory system powered by a small, weak heart. They have a large intestine running through the back of the abdomen. Tarantulas have a hard outer covering called an exoskeleton making them hard on the outside and soft on the inside.

Tarantulas live somewhere between ten to twenty years. Females live longer than males and lay four-hundred to five-hundred eggs in each sac. When a tarantula outgrows its exoskeleton, it sheds it and grows a new one. This process is called molting. Males molt about fifteen times before becoming a fully-grown adult, which is the only time you can classify the gender.

There isn’t just one type of tarantula though. The bird spider is the world’s largest spider, and yes, it’s a tarantula. You can find them in brazil and Venezuela. The bird spider is very aggressive and will attack. Another type of tarantula is the American tarantula. It’s a dark brown tarantula that lives four to five years.

Are you still afraid of tarantulas? After finding out information they aren’t as scary. To know they aren’t poison to you kills the scariness. Like I said, tarantulas are very intriguing creatures!

Yikes! I'd probably freak out if I saw one. D: The thing that gets me..is the fur. It's just so... =| AHH!

But, yeah. At least they aren't poisonous. xD

My brother-in-law keeps one as a pet at his Tattoo shop. They're actually not that bad domesticated. And I'm arachnaphobic, so that's saying a lot.

I had a dream that three huge gray tarantulas were in my bed while I was sleeping when I was younger. Ewww!

Omg i feel so sorry for you especially when you dont like spiders.

If i had to write a report on any kind of spider i would be devastated.

And those facts are just a little.....

creepy? Anyway i got a 105!! ( out of 110) ( i messed up my roman numerals)

You may think I'm a freak now, but I once held a taratula at a carnavil xD
First time it was gross, second time wasn't that gross. :D It was like holding my friends puppy. (The puppy was about 3 weeks old and it had hair, not fur)
