How is/did everyone get their wedding dress to Florida?

I haven't got my dress yet but i have a pretty good idea what i am looking for and i was just wondering, do you put your dress in the hold on the plane? Has anyone ever done this?

What if you have a big dress and it doesn't fit in a minimum requirements box for the plane?

Mine is thin enough that I plant to put it in a garment bag with Df's suit and bring that as my carry-on. I know lots of brides ship theirs to Carrolyn Allens before hand since a lot airlines don't have space to store it. I wouldn't trust the airlines to check it either.

I think it will depend on the size of your dress.

My DD is thinking about Fedex-ing her dress from the UK to Carolyn Allen, and then having them bring it to her hotel room already steamed. There is the appeal of having on-line tracking and not having to carry it on as hand luggage. But it's a hard decision to make ... there's something very reassuring about clutching the dress on her knee for 8 hours

Hiya,

where i bought my dress, they sell the boxes that are hand luggage size for taking it abroad.

They have said that if i take it to them a week before i go they will pack it in the box for me....i am still wondering how they are going to fit it in the box!!

They assure me it will fit!

I definitely didnt want to put my dress in my case i want to know where it is at all times!!

I worried and worried about this for ages, I rand loads of people at the airport and airline etc and they all told me different things. In the end I decided to play ignorant and took it in it's dress bag with nothing else just folded in half and put into the over head bins on the plane, where i could keep my eye on it. It was a big dress and wasn't overly squashed in, and it came out looking fantastic, I didn't even have it steamed before the wedding and there were no creases.

I am from UK, and I must have been the only crazy bride but I put mine in the hold of the plane.

The only concern I had was when my luggage was on the carousel in Sanford, I was not quick enough to get my case and ending up running across Sanford to grab my case before it disappeared into the wall.

My dress went back in the hold too, no problems.

I did buy a box to carry it on but choose not to use this as I didn't want to lug it through the airport.

i might play ignorant too and carry it on and take a bag incase they ask me to pack it as hand luggage ... or i will get the dress shop people to pack in a soft hand luggage holdall and take that on with me.

Hmm, I don't know .... probably given that everything that eats, sleeps, breathes or moves seems to be heavily taxed in the US and the UK

I think the best way to do it, no joking aside, is to buy a seat for it. That is exactly what we did. That way my wife, I and the dress took up the three seats on one side of the plane aisle. It guaranteed that the dress was perfect on the trip, and eased my wife's fears of something happening to it. We flew Southwest, who sells seats for dresses. Other airlines may or may not. I am a big believer that the cost is definitely justified for the peace of mind. Good luck.

I think we will do the same thing with Southwest. Do you recall if the dress seat cost any less? I don't mind if there isn't a discount. I could always buy a cheap ticket for "Ms. White Dress."

The size of the garment bag will, however, spoil the surprise for my fiance who is being told that I'm wearing a "brown pantsuit" to our wedding.

We are flying Continental so that I can take my dress as hand luggage. Teir limit is 23kg (!) so I reckon I should be ok!

The travel boxes from The Empty Box Company are heavy as I checked with them - around the 4kg mark - so make sure your dress won't take it over the limit with the weight.

I looked into shipping it to Carolyn Allens, or to our resort, but you have to pay tax and duty as it is over a certain value. That applies if you send it to yourself or to someone as a gift item. If you ship it back to the UK you have the same problem too.

Someone at Customs and Excise told me to take the receipt to prove that the dress was a 'personal item' and then there would be no question of anyone trying to charge you tax and duty when you take it with you, or bring it back. For something to class a personal item and not part of the duty free allowance it has to be at least 6 months old.

I plan on gently rolling mine up (it's not very poofy or structured), and having it be the main item inside my carry on luggage. I did this for a bridesmaid dress before, and it worked pretty well.

I took mine as hand luggage, they packed it in the shop, for me and then i had it steamed in the room, the morning of wedding, once DH had left the room, all was fine, have a lovely time.

I was so worried about my dress and nearly cried when the airlines told us that they could not hang it up and would not guarantee a place for it laying flat in the overheads. I decided to take my chances checking it. I was too worried to ship it in fear of it not arriving, or not arriving in one piece. I had a fairly poofy bottomed dress which I left in the original garment bag then, put that bag into a travel garment bag just before leaving for the airport. I had a direct flight so I checked it. (I would have taken it as carry on luggage if we had had a connection.) As soon as we arrived at our Disney hotel I unpacked it. It was flawless, no wrinkles had set in. However, the veil had gotten a little crushed. I left that in the shower area and after a few steamy showers they fell out.
