How important is use year when adding on?

Other than the increased complexity in keeping track of your points, especially when it comes to banking, how important do you think it is too match an add-on's use year with your existing use year.

We are looking to add on at VLW. We currently have 210 points at BCV with a June use year. I think I will have a better chance of finding the points we want if I am open to any use year.

Does anyone know of any real problems with multiple contracts with different use years?

IMO, it depends on how many points you will add on and how you will use it. For less than 150 points, I'd hold out for the same use year if you plan on keeping your other contract. Get on the DVC wait list as well as looking through MULTIPLE resale companies.

Thanks Dean.

I have talked to most of the resales agents - I should call my DVC guide too i guess.

I still don't see the importance of the same use year though - as long as I keep track for banking etc. Am I missing something?

The problem is if you have a small add on contract and need to combine points, it's far more complicated though not impossible. I have 3 contracts all different use years and would not hesitate to buy a different use year unless it were a small contract of less than 150 points or so. But it is your choice.

Tracking multiple Use Years hasn't been a problem for us (we have 4 Use Years). I use a checking program (MS Money) and set up each contract as a separate account. Each reservation is entered as a debit and deposits are made at the start of each Use Year (or transfer). This allows for easy accounting for each transaction, banking, borrowing. I also verify the balance in each account with every phone call to MS.

I'd agree that smaller contracts can be more of a nuisance to track, but it's certainly manageable. If you find a contract to your liking thru resale, I wouldn't hesitate to grab it. Be sure to do the math though, as some small contracts may end up costing more than a direct purchase from DVC (with closing costs).

Enjoy!

There are also split confiramations (when you need points from both accounts) ad a lot more complexity when making reservervations that require more than the points in 1 account. Sometimes you get left with a little in each account.

If I remember, there are also limitations on transfers (altough I canot remember themm now), and moving points from 1 account to the other is transferring.

Isn't that true of separate contracts even with the same use year?

Or can you combine separate purchases under a single contract if the use year is the same?

Add-ons by definition are of the same use year as the original contract. If you purchase a new contract with a new use year, it really isn't an add on. It's a separate contract.

If the add on is the same resort as the orginal contract, then it is seemless. You will never know which contract the points are coming from unless you read the print out of point use.

If the add on is a separate resort, then you may get separate confirmations for reservations made between the 11 and 7 month mark. Once the 7 month mark hits, it again would be seemless.

Sorry for my ignorance on adding-on, please bear with me for a few more questions.

1) Can you only add-on direct from Disney, or can you buy through resale and have it considered to be an add-on by Disney?

2) If a resale can be an add-on, is the only requirement that it have the same use year - it does not have to be the same resort? Are there any other rules on what consitutes an add-on verses a second contract?

3) If resales can be add-on's, and I buy one with the same use year as my existing contract, will Disney automatically process it as an add-on, or do I have to take additional steps to let Disney know its an add-on?

Thanks.

Any add on is technically a separate contract but DVC treats it as one contract other than the home resort issue if it's under the same master contract. Add on's from DVC will be the same master contract and treated as such. Add on contracts resale that are the same use year will usually be the same master contract but not always. DVC would like to have them under the same contract if possible but sometimes they don't know and once it's set, they will not change it I've been told. If you buy resale, make sure you make it clear to DC every step of the way that you are a member and you want the new contract linked to the old one.
