How I got from MK to DTD in only 2 hours (long)

As you can tell, this is a very strange and outragous topic but is hilarious and funny. Before I begin, as a wackiness level, I must state that this story includes 4 types of transportation and plenty of waiting. It involves security guards, lost guests, and golden mouse ears. And I promise you that it is true.

Now, on with the show...

It started at about 5:30 PM. I figured that there was a direct route to DTD from the Magic Kingdom. I knew there wasn't at Epcot and the other parks but seeing how Magic Kingdom was the first ever park and the furthest from DTD from these parks, something must be different. I was wrong.

I exit the park from the train (left the Frontierland station) and after about 14 minutes, I had exited the park. I was to meet my parents at the House of Blues at 7. I figured an hour was a good time to leave for it. That was my first mistake.

Proudly in my golden mouse ears with name engraving, I have second thoughts about the bus and I devise a backup plan to take the monorail to the nearest resort (in this case, the Contemporary) and catch the bus there. I approach a security guard (still proudly in mouse ears) and ask if there is a bus to DTD and she points to the resort busses. The monorail to the TTC and Resorts are waiting in the MK station. I think that the security guard has this known. I look over the sign stating bus information. After two minutes of searching for the words "Downtown" and "Disney," I come up short as both of the monorails are exiting the station. Great. Approximately 5 minutes until another. Oh well, it is about 6:10 now and I have a whole 50 minutes to get there. This was my second mistake.

I march over to the resort monorail (which would have saved me about 30 minutes, believe it or not), and have a thought. Third mistake, here we go. "If I go to the Transportation and Ticket Center, which acts as a hub for all transportation, I can catch a bus to DTD and be there with time to spare. Well, after 5 years, memories get faded so much that you dont recall that only parks are serviced from this wonderful place. Waiting about 10 minutes for the monorail, I board the Express Monorail to the TTC, which takes approximately 7 minutes.

I arrive in complete pride of myself as I had the best plan ever. What a clever thinker I was to have thought of a shortcut. I will brag on the DIS boards when I come home. I was that shocked to find out that it did not service the DTD area. Oh great. I approach security (need I remind you that one guard was already wrong) about my problem and after a wierd look of awe and comedy given to me, I get told to walk to the nearest resort (the Polynesian) and catch the bus marked "DTD".

Walking there was pleasant until I reminded myself that my feet hurt because I walked back and forth from Mission:Space and Soarin' 4 times, then went through the entire World Showcase in 1 1/2 hours the day before (yeah, I was that crazy and my feet hurt THAT much). I get to the Poly after about 10 minutes of walking. I feel awkward there as I am the only one with golden mouse ears in a 1 mile diameter. I sit down on the bench (thankfully -- I am now feeling like Dave from the Disney Vacation Planning video (he really is right 100% of the time)) next to a couple who this is obviously their first visit and the first day. It is about 7:30 now. They were planning on going to the Studios and ride the "Terror of Tower" (yes, I know. I said "Terror of Tower"), Rock N' Rollercoaster and a few others. The park closed at 9:00 btw.

Anyway, after a 20 minute wait which seemed like an hour, the bus marked DTD finally arrives. Finally, hope. But my mistakes have only just begun.

If you recall, I was the the TTC and asked about directions to DTD and they said because I wanted restaurants, I should go to the Marketplace. Yes, that is fine and dandy but the House of Blues is on the West Side. As most of you guessed, yep.. Mistake number 4.

I arrive at the Marketplace and quickly look for a reference to the map. No mention of the place. Instead of doing the wise thing and backtracking to the bus stop, I decide to walk it. DTD doesn't look THAT big on the map. Hahaha, my friends, that map is a very small scale. After walking about 15 minutes (or at least thats what it felt like), I arrive in Pleasure Island. Mistake number 5 occurs when I go all the way near the parking lot instead of going straight through. Anyway, I finally get to walk to the West Side after that distraction. At this point, I have no clue whether I'll be at the West Side before the vacation is over or not. By this time, it is about 8:30, I eat in less than 20 minutes (as my meal was previously ordered) and am in DisneyQuest by 9:00 PM.

This was definately an adventure. In recap, what could have been solved by a simple train -> monorail -> bus, became a train -> monorail -> walk -> bus -> much, much longer walk. Just to show you, do your homework. I thought I had it figured out but nothing told me to memorize bus configurations. I'll laugh so hard now if I find out there really was a bus to DTD though so if there is, please tell me. Haha.

Anyway, let this opportunity open to share your wildest Disney moments.

*MENTAL NOTE*- Don't ever ask TimothyG to go on vacation with us and show us how to get from place to place. :rotfl2: :teeth: :rotfl2: Just think you prob. lost about 5 pounds from all that walking....so there is a positive note for you. :rotfl:

Funny story!! :rotfl2: :rotfl: Gotta love the transportation. Our first trip, my sister and I had to leave from the Contemporary and make it back to our hotel at the Poly. The monorails were closed because it was after midnight (don't know if they still do this) any way I think the year was 1982. The buses then were the grren flag, the red with white stripe, the blue with white strip etc..Remember them?? WE were 12 and 17 at the time and we made so many mistakes it was hilarious. Our parents were super worried by the time we got back to the hotel. We had a baal though!! The buses make it much easier now when it has the next place listed on the bus computer screen. :wizard:

Haha, while that is probably the best thing to do, this was the first time that I ever had a problem with the transportation like that. Normally, I do pretty well with it but obviously not this time. I need to quit second guessing myself though. I think that problem is the worst one that I had. Other than that, it would have been great. Oh well, it was an experience and now I'm pretty experienced with the transportation. haha.

As for losing the 5 pounds, there were so much good food there. Pecos Bill and the Tomorrowland Cafe (keep forgetting the name), Rainforest Cafe, and House Of Blues, that 5 pounds is probably already back on. haha

Man I would have been upset. I too got off at the Market Place twice when I needed to be in the West side.. Walked the first time learned my lesson and took a boat to the west side the second time.. Now I want to know how to get from DTD to MK and vise versa is it mono to TTC to bus to resort then catch bus to DTD? That is pretty aweful, I thought I read something about Disney starting park to park buses..

Ok my son said he thought there was a boat that goes from EP to DTD so maybe mono to EP and boat to DTD?

How hilarious. I have made these types of mistakes in the past as well. It's nice to see that you can laugh about it now.

Oh........and at least you have your golden Mickey ears!

I have done the same thing lol..it was at my very first stay on Site and I figured that if I couldnt catch a bus o where i wanted to go i could just get on any old bus as a sort of middle-stop....that didnt work out to well..anyways now i know better so hopefully i wont make the same mistake.(although i cant promise it wont happen when im sleep walking out of one of the parks)

I have been to WDW so many times and stayed on sight and it has been a few years and I have tottaly drawn a blank on how to get to DTD from the parks. Anyone have a clue?

Fastest way would have been a bus to OKWest and then switch to a DTD bus. Do not ask how I now know this LOL

DTD > MK:
Bus to any resort > bus to MK or
Bus to any monorail resort > monorail to MK or
Bus to Contemporary > walk to MK or
Bus to POR, POFQ, OKW or SSR > boat to DTD

MK > DTD: Reverse any of the above

Epcot is not connected to Downtown Disney by navigable waterways, so that option is out.

Yes, it's one of the Disney Vacation Club Hotels on property.

We had just bought in to the DVC while on a Disney Cruise, when we got back to Disney we thought's we'd spend some time and go around to see in person the hotels. So we're at the OkW and we decide we want to go the the Rainforest for dinner. It was before 4 pm so no buses were going to Downtown Disney (We didn't realize that before 4PM you took the boat from OKW)

We take a bus BACK to the MK, from there take the Monorail to the Poly and then take the DTD bus from the Poly. You can just see our faces as we pass the OKW like 2 hours later from this little trip and realize we were about 10 mintues by bus and 20 mintues on the boat to DTD from the OKWest. LOL

So basically you can not get from MK to DTD. You can only get there from a resort not a park?

Just a note, the boat from DTD Marketplace to The West Side doesn't start running until around 4pm. I saw several upset people recently who were told to get on the boat and it would drop them off at The West Side. This was early afternoon. They were very unhappy when they learned they had to go to Port Orleans, get off the boat, get in a line and wait for a boat back to where they started. I tried to tell them to catch a DTD bus from the resort, but they wouldn't listen.

Please try to remember. Not all of the CMs actually take the Disney transportation. They aren't necessarily in the know.

Yes, there is not a direct bus from any Disney Park to DTD.

The reason for this is because it does not cost any money to Park at DTD, and people were driving there and then taking a bus to a Park, thereby saving the daily parking fee. So if you want the "free" parking it'll cost you about 4 hours of your time getting to and from DTD.

:rotfl2: Too funny!! Thanks for the chuckles!! I will make sure to do my homework first before heading out to Disney, if I ever want to do DTD from MK!!

I needed to get from TTC to Wilderness lodge in a hurry on my last trip and when I looked for a bus they told me there was no bus to that resort, I had to take the ferry or monorail over to MK then take a bus or boat from there to WL.
I had to get there in a real hurry so I took a cab. Cost me $3 and I gave the guy a $2 tip. I got there in less than 10 minutes and I wasn't hot and sweaty.
I have taken a cab other times when I was really rushed for a reservation or meeting someone. It has never cost me over $5. Peggie

A very wise former WDW bus driver has been quoted as saying "Only trust the people in the purple pants. Doesn't matter the question, the people in purple pants WILL know the answer"

(for those who aren't up to date on disney costumes, bus drivers are the only ones that wear purple pants)
