How House Hunters (HGTV Show) really works

I lived overseas for 10 years and people greatly underestimate how often visitors will come...not only for the $500 and up plane tickets to cross the ocean but the hours on a plane, the passport issue, the fear of the unknown.
.
Sorry, did you mean overestimate?

My peeve on HHI is how Americans look ugly....."what? the fridge is SO small, I can't handle that, I'm from TEXAS!" or "why is the washing machine in the bathroom, that's so weird!!!!!"

No, that's normal for that country and YOU KNOW THAT. You live there. We just come off sounding like idiots.

"I must be city center.....oh, it's so loud here with the city noises"
"I must have 2 bedrooms....this bedroom isn't big enough for my king size bed (that I probably didn't even ship over)"
"This kitchen is nasty, it has no granite.....oh, look, historic details!"
"I'm so thrilled to be living in Paris, it's been my dream forever....ugh, everything is so French here"

I did read on a message board where someone said it was exhausting, doing the filming over and over like 4 days. But a free ticket home to the US would be nice to film the "going away scene"

The only way DH will watch with me is if he can drink everytime someone says "entertain". I'm not kidding.

I cringe when I hear some of these transplants complaining about things they're not used to - but are very normal for the county that they're moving to. We're such snobs sometimes.

The last sentence make me laugh outloud. Maybe we'll try that here.

OOps, I did mean that!

People greatly OVERESTIMATE how many times their friends and relatives will spend $500 (if not $1200) per ticket for a 6-14 hour flight in coach, to come visit. And get a passport months in advance, and deal with the jet lag and the language barrier and all that. Many folks living overseas get homesick and come back to the US every year or 2 and family and friends may decide to wait and see them then.

So the whole dedicated guest room/separate bath thing is nuts, particularly when they are living in a major metropolitan city where space is at a premium.

Did anyone see HH this past week? There was an episode on with a couple from New Hampshire looking for a vacation home on Lake Winnipesaukee.

Their budget was *supposedly* between $1m-$2.5m.

What I remember most from the show--Joe the husband kept on insisting he wanted a house large enough to fit the future wives and children that their sons might have.

She kept on telling him that she didn't want to clean a house that big!

And I'm thinking all along--WTH--if someone could afford a vacation home that costs over $2 million, do you really think that I would believe that the wife is going to be cleaning it? Are you kidding me???

Joe finally settled for a real bargain priced vacation home--it was only $895,000.

LOL!!! I was watching the same one and thinking the exact same thing... oh please... like she was going to clean!

I know a family...they are currently buying a new Bentley as the family sedan. The wife said a Lamborghini would not fit their lifestyle. :drive: They have a LOT of money.

I know for a fact she cleans her own house (and it is spotless). She won't let anyone touch anything in the house.

Sounds like she's the exception rather than the rule.

I always wondered how it worked on Extreme Makeover home edition. It can't be coincidence that the family is always home when Ty shows up with his bullhorn.

EM does a lot of preliminary taping at the house (you know, the background stories when they express how they hope they'll be chosen). The family knows *a* camera crew is arriving that day. They don't necessarily know it's because they've been chosen and that it'll be the bus with Ty pulling in. They just think they're being vetted for the show.

DH works in TV locally and the whole staff at his station knew the family in our area had been chosen. But they had to stay a couple of blocks away until the "surprise" had been revealed. DH got to spend that whole week on set, though. He said it was pretty amazing, but as PP have stated, things were taped over and over for different angles, etc.

We were told the same thing for Undercover Boss. That a film crew MAY be coming, to tape for a reality show about a man who lost his restaraunt business & wanted to try something new, retail management. We were only given 48 hours notice on it, so we had to scramble to get things in order.
