How has the food network

I have been watching cooking shows for many many years (remember "The Frugal Gourmet?") and although I have learned a few cooking things, what I have learned most is that I like to watch other people work while I sit on my couch.

I like:

Emeril
Alton Brown
Marc Summers
Iron Chef (American version)
Chopped
others

I do not like:

Ina Garten (her voice is tooooo quiet and monotone)
Challenges (They make me a nervous wreck)
Dinner Impossible (Same reason)
Any of the yelling chefs

I cannot stand......(and the winner is).....Rachel Ray!!! Her voice, her squeaky laugh, her cooking show that is more of a talk show, her EVOO (PLEASE stop calling it that-we get it you made up an acronym that no one else uses...there's a reason, it's annoying.) and her stupid gimmicky kitchen aids- a Spoonula? And those pot holders that are connected-oh yeah one more thing to hang down and catch on fire. And the tossing the salt over the shoulder for luck..Guess what! You are supposed to do that if you spill salt, not if you just use it. I would hate to walk around on that floor with salt all over it.

Whew...I feel much better, thanks for listening.;) Now back to your regularly scheduled program.

ITA, HRH. She drives me insane. (RR, that is)

I have to confess that I sent a recipe to her site once, though. I was very impressed that someone from her staff called me for an interview on it. It doesn't take much to impress me, though.

because of the Food Network I was able to recognize Emeril when I saw him in a restaurant last weekend...

Because of the Food Network my subconscious mind has created a huge cynical plan to off my husband and marry Alton Brown. Me thinks I may have a little crush on him. Maybe a little too much since I have enlisted the help of my kids to pull it off!:lmao:

I love the challenges. My goal for this year is to attend one in person!

I like Alton Brown a lot. For the most part, the main change to my life is that I now own a bunch of gadgets I never had before. I rarely use them, but they are cool!

One complaint I have about FN is all the stuipd Challenge shows, and now the reality shows. I want to watch FN to see people cook, and get recipies from them. Yeah, it was fun at first to see people make the challenge cakes (especially when they were in Disney), but after a while, its just boring. Especially with its the Challenge: Chicken. Its chicken - who cares about that!!! Plus, if you do see something you would want to make, they don't give recipies on those shows. Waist of time IMO

I totally agree.

Shows on Food Network I NEVER watch....

1. Ace of Cakes
2. The Challenges
3. Next Food Network Star
4. Anything that resemble "reality" TV.
5. Barefoot Contessa - because I can't stand all the lovey dovey stuff... same goes for Paula Deen and her husband... blech! Just cook, already.

I can't think fo anything - I sit thre ususally asking myself or dh (he likes to watch all the contest shows) ans ask who the heck actually will eat that junk...:rotfl: of course I know people do - thank goodness its not anyone we know that we have to eat with.

I have learned how to cook and how to play around with recipes to suit my family's tastes.

I religiously watch:
Good Eats
Tyler's Ultimate (meet him last weekend )
30 Minute Meals
Giada at Home
Everyday Itialian
Paula's Home Cooking
Guy's Big Bite

I can not stand
Barefoot Contessa
Viva Daisy
Down Home with The Neelys

Hey, I love Ina. I made her cubed sweet potatoes and white potates in olive oil with salt and pepper roasted and my DH asks for them all the time.

Frankly, all of them can drive you nuts occassionally. I always wonder why Alton has to use so dang many bowls. All of them actually take so many extra steps.

My DS#1 has always loved to cook but now I actually have to fight for the kitchen. Sometimes I don't mind but I do like my own cooking better. He uses too many spices, and dishes. When he cooks, I get to clean up. :sad2:

that ceramic knives are AWSOME.

to add a touch of olive oil to butter in a pot or pan to prevent it from burning:thumbsup2

i don't watch much regularly on it anymore-i used to love 'door knock dinners' though. i generaly enjoy seeing shows that talk to using what you have on hand vs. having to go out and get a gazillion ingredients for (probably why i also like the 'quick fire challenge' in top chef-they have to go with what's in the pantry or presented to them).

I love the Food Network! I have learned a lot from watching the various shows. My personal favorite is 'Diners, Drive-ins and Dives'. I am also fond of Good Eats and Top Chef.

Phantom Gourmet is also good, although not on the FN.

:thumbsup2 DH and I always talk about going to all those Diners and Dives when we have no kids and a lot of free time!

I also agree I have picked up a few things like salting the pasta water. But overall, I don't watch FN nearly as much as I did a few years ago. I don't like the new shows much, the Neely's and there is another one I don't even remember her name. I see her and change the channel. I watched the first couple of shows and nothing she made even remotely appealed to me. I like Alton Brown also, and Ina Garten is o.k., sometimes she has great recipies. But ultimately in the end, I am like another poster, I came to the conclusion I just like to sit on the couch watching other people cook!
