Note: This is not to be a politcal thread just a thread to talk about how the economy has effected your school...

So my school is in a $5 Million defecit :(
There laying off 40 teachers
Taking away 5th Grade Band
Taking away the "less popular" sports like tennis, and cross country
And doing other numerous things that we havent heard of yet :(
Some of my favorite teachers and being layed off and its so sad to see
Where are they going to go what are they gonna do?
Its so sad to see happening people close to me getting layed off it just breaks my heart
So how has the economy effected your school?

My school refuses to participate in the recession.

We've added sports to the list of school-funded varsity sports (most recently Hockey, Lacrosse, and Indoor Track).
We've just built a new school.
Teachers are getting small raises.

It goes on and on.

And it helps that my principal (who is leaving after this year) won $80 million in the lottery.

My school hasnt been affected at all, it actualy seems as though we have been spending MORE than usual.

They just built new tennis courts, like 5 of them!
It costed 2.5 million dollars!
Yet, they cant get new not smelly annoying scratchy cheer uniforms like they promised? :headache:

:rotfl:
well thats nice
xD

Definately.
No more field trips.
We might have to have other teachers fill in for retiring teachers.
Other things we probably won't see until next year.

But yet they're adding more classes and taking away our study hall. -Is confused-

Not really

I go to private school and attendance has been up over the past 5 years so the school has been doing a lot of renervations lately.

It hasn't.
My school is in re-build mode. They are re-doing all of the classrooms, and making them tile floors with walls. We didn't have walls before and it's really nice to have them now. :) They did a good job.

I'm wondering where they got the money to do everything, because they also repainted all the lockers a few months back.

It hasn't affected my high school since I'm high schooled. My college, however, is affected a lot. Tuition is the most expensive in our area, over $35,000 per year, so admission is not as high as it was before. Major budget cuts, especially in the athletic department (whose budget wasnt very high to start with). Profs and other employees' salary dropped slightly and there's no telling when it will go back up to normal. They're in the middle of building a 3.5 million dollar civic arts center, but that has continued to be built and it looks like the budget cuts wont affect that. And events budget suffered a major cut.

For example of the events budget. Yesterday I went to an Easter sunrise service at my college, where they provide a light breakfast afterwards. In years past, there was always about 4 different drink choices, fruit, 6+ types of pastries, bacon, eggs, toast, and breakfast potatoes. This year, however, we had OJ, coffee, and cinnamon rolls. Sort of a letdown.

Um let's see.

We have no paper.
Teachers have to bring in their own reams, or use mulit-colored paper. I've taken many tests this year on pink paper.
They're cutting the Family and Consumer Sciences department.
I made a thread about this before.
They're making a ton of teachers retire at the end of the year.

I'm glad it's my senior year because my HS is going down the tubes. I just feel bad for all the kids who still have to go there.

It might. Something about the college joining another college because if we don't, then it would go bankrupt. I think all the teachers are staying, but it's going to be more strict then it is now.

We have no paper.
We dont have enough textbooks.
We have up to 3 teachers sharing a classroom.
Kids dont really participate in events that our school puts on.

It doesnt help that FL schools already had a ton of budget cuts before the recession. :/

However, tax payers money did go to build a $6 million dollar building to be added onto our school for our magnet program. It's ridiculous. We have a zoo in our school and fishtanks are in the walls of this magnet building, and in every single classroom..including english/math classes.

It hasn't really effected my school. The only thing is is that we don't have any paper. So we get tests and homework on green and pink paper xD. Also, the teachers who teach the 'special needs' classes and classes like current issues and study skills have to share classes with regular teachers.

We just got DDR for gym(well, for next year), so our school can't be doing that bad.

We have no paper.
Like my teachers can't copy anything except tests and quizzes.
And I, like above people have said, have taken a few tests on pink, and yellow, and blue paper.

my school... oh god. i hate my school.
my school is going to make us either have to print out our notes online or were getting laptop things... which i dont get b.c if they're trying to save money how are they going to get us laptop thingys?
they're cutting a bunch of teachers.. making classes MUCH larger.. cutting small sports and clubs.. a lot more too.
they're cutting my favorite teacher and im so upset.
oh our stupid economy... good thing you said this isnt a political post. i could say a lot!

We are doing really well...mostly because other small private schools are closing and we are getting there kids. We are actually a really rich school but it might not look like it. But are principal is an idiot and is cutting down on everything we do so we just use basic stuff now. He was trying to get rid of our field trip that we paid for with are tuition.

We're doing pretty well. My math teacher uses pink yellow and blue, but I think that's just cause she likes colorful things, because she has stacks and stacks of white paper. I guess the economy really hasn't affected our school at all.

Paper's always been an issue at my school.
But, I go to one of the most well-funded schools in the state. Once they stop taxing the county, I'm screwed.

Our school isn't doing so bad, but they seem to be... well, not building the new science wing they've been saying they're going to build for years.
But this one other little Catholic school in the area is closing.
That's just kind of sad... I'm glad it hasn't come to that.
I mean, like, "hey kids, find a new school."

I can't say it has..
Most of our problems dwell with a local K-8 school being overcrowded, so when they get to HS we're getting huge amounts of kids. We're sharing lockers now (but the freshman don't, it's not fair..) and there is absolutely no room in the auditorium for everyone. Luckily I'm not a freshman. They don't even get plastic chairs brought in from classrooms. It's only gonna get worse...

As far as paper goes, we waste more in a month than others do in a year. My french teacher has a book on the six writing traits, and photocopies most sheets that are in it and hands them out. She has two classes with about.. oh let's say 25 students.
We've gotten about 45 sheets of paper. That's 2250 sheets of paper. For two classes! That we'lll never look at again! for one class that's 1125 sheets. Godd. She probably does the same with her grade 9, 11 and 12 classes. That's ridiculous. It literally looks like I have a novel growing in my binder.
My science teacher loves to give us notes and say 'You guys are so fortunate, I had like 4 pages of notes for you to copy but I summarized it for you.'
And she gives them to us. And then again the next day typed out differently, and then again at review time. So by the end fo the semester we have 3 copies of every page of note, written differently. That doesn't include work sheets, pages we actually copy notes on, her random Bill Nye worksheets, or stuff that explains the project we have to do.
It's ridiculous. These two teachers waste enough paper...
