How has having a tutor helped your child?

DD10 will start tutoring today. Verbally and vocabulary wise, she reads at an eighth grade level. Comprehension wise, she's at a fourth grade level. (she's in fifth grade). It takes hours of extra effort for her to achieve good grades in subjects that involve reading/comprehending.
After ruling out learning disorders, we have decided on getting a tutor. She will tutor her 2x/wk in reading and SS/Science.
For those who have had tutors, have you seen a significant difference? Does it last for most of the rest of their education?

Thanks

My oldest son and my middle daughter both have a private tutor and she's totally worth the price we pay her. Both kids have just learned better study habits and performance on tests are always great.

Thanks AKLRULZ! If I might ask, how long have they had the tutor? And did you get the tutor because they were struggling or to get them ahead in the subject?
Thanks again.

My daughter initially just needed a bit of help with a particular subject area in math last year when she was in 6th grade so we hired the tutor for what we thought would be a short term thing to get my daughter over the hump. But it just worked out great and they started working in other subjects just to give her a boost. This year, my oldest son started Algebra I and was having some issues translating the theory to the test so we hired her to help him to jump start his test taking abilities and we've not stopped. We'll continue now just to supplement their instructional time outside of the classroom to enhance their studies. So long story short (lol) they both needed a bit of help but it turned into getting them ahead. :thumbsup2

DD had one for a little while. She was struggling with a math concept and just wasn't getting it. A friend from church who teaches math offered to tutor her. She went from an F on the first test to an A. Sometimes they just need it explained a little different way before they get it.

When I got help for DD she cried that it was because she was stupid (her words  ). I tried to explain that it wasn't. Not all teachers teach the same way and not all students learn the same way. She just needed the concepts explained and little different than her teachers 'style'.

In the beginning of this year my DD had tutoring...in comprehension.. I had a tutor that specialized in comprehension...this way it would be used for all her subjects...she was only tutor for 5 months..It was worth all money I spent. She had really excelled this year in all her subjects. :sunny:

My ds is dyslexic. We were struggling with him for years until we got him a dyslexia tutor. He had the first tutor for about 2 years, she was the BEST tutor ever. He's been through 2 others since & is currently in between tutors, but is doing amazingly well -- all from that initial tutor! Go for it, what do you have to lose? :cool1:

I got my DD16's tutor after getting a recommendation from the school.

We had her tutored for the better part of her 10th grade year in Geometry. She had been making D's. That one year of tutoring has paid off: she's making B's this year without the tutor.

My dd is in 10th and started to tutor in her Freshman year with Algebra.
I find the most important thing in a tutor is finding someone who "clicks" with your child.

Benefits my dd has gotten....
Someone who is NOT a parent to encourage, help, correct without "parent pressure to please". I think this is the biggest bonus. It is all about just learning material and nothing else.

As wise as I am, I cannot teach my dd HS Algebra & Geometry in this day and age, esp. specific for her class/teacher.

In addition, having a good tutor can get you in with another good tutor. She will need to switch next year to someone in demand. Her current tutor is good friends with this tutor (a math teacher) and this will help.

Another benefit is that it helps with anxiety. Your kid knows they can get help one on one, without interruption when they are not getting it.

Thanks everyone for the info. DD had her first session and both said that it went great. On another note, I am also wondering if she may be dyslexic. I'll be discussing this with her teacher and tutor.
