How good/bad is San Angel Inn?

DH and I have reservations next month and have never eaten there - we have heard some very mixed reviews. For anyone who has eaten there, is the food worth the price? How about the atmosphere - I know it's located in the Mexican pyramid but is it too subdued, too dark or what? Any comments much appreciated.

IMO San Angel is beautiful and serene. Don't order the regular Taco Bell type entrees and I think you will find that it is very much worth the money.

We were not overly impressed with SAI. It was nice enough but IMHO there are much better places to eat in the WS area (Le Cellier, Rose & Crown, Marrakesh).

One of the reasons I think I did not enjoy it as much is because you are packed in like sardines. The tables are REALLY close together. I felt like any minute my elbow was going to hit the person sitting next to me.

We had a lovely lunch right on the rail in front of the "volcano". The food was good, kids had chicken quesadillas, DH had nachos and I had a combo plate. The atmosphere is really neat. It is like being in a mexican village at night. The boat ride is a bit cheesy (like small world) but we always do it.

Other than being crowded and the tables being close together, the atmosphere is very nice. I really like the inside of the Mexico pavillion. Inside, under the stars................pretty cool. You are on the banks of El Rio del Tiempo, with the volcano just off in the hills. It is neat.

I wish I could say the same of the food and service on our last visit. When we ate there last December the food was average at best, and probably not worth the price. DW got a taco plate of some sort and it was very average. I had a steak which was on the small side and so smothered in sauce that it was hard to find. The service was not as attentive and friendly as we are used to at other Disney sit down restaurants.

We love San Angel Inn...we usually go for lunch. Don't expect taco bell mexican. This is real mexican...can't remember from which area.

The food, atmosphere are all wonderful.

If you choose not to eat there..then try Chefs de France, Alfredo's, Norway, Morocco (our other favorites in the world showcase)

DNBois - I'm glad you decided to try it. We go for lunch pretty much every visit. Occasionally we have had mediocre service but for the most part it's very good and the food is not the best or worst meal you'll probably have. We go for the atmosphere, kind of like you know your in WDW when........
Hope you have a good experience.

We also love the SAI but usually make late lunch reservations there. Quite a better value. I had the beef tenderloin the last time I was there and it was excellent. Margaritas are good also. Great atmosphere but the 2 yr old with us on one dining experience did not care for the dark setting. I'd suggest getting a margarita across from the SAI at the little margarita stand they have before you go in as they are quite good also. They used to have a chicken mole dish that was terrific. Enjoy!

There can be drawbacks to this restaurant, but we usually go because we enjoy the atmosphere and vegeplatter. This last week we went to Marrakesh instead for a change. I really liked Marrakesh but DS was very dissapointed that we weren't going to be eating at San Angel Inn. He kept asking when we were going to eat there. I won't leave out this restaurant next time.

I heard many years ago that this place was just an expensive version of the cantina outside, all the same food.

For years, many years, we never went there.

Two years ago we tried it. It became an instant favorite.

I am right now deciding when to eat there during my solo days next month.....Sunday lunch, I believe.

I really didn't like this restaurant. The food was overpriced and underwhelming! I found it very bland, and was really unimpressed. I have heard good reviews on this board, too, but it just didn't do it for me.

We like to go in for an early light lunch...Queso Fundidos and margaritas!
The service isn't always the best. The past few times we've gone, I asked the hostess to sit us with someone with a little personality! It helped.

I fell down the stairs there years ago...BEFORE I even had a margarita! I just couldn't see after coming in from the bright sunshine.
The paramedics came (in about 1 minute it seemed) and someone brought me a wheelchair.
We stayed for lunch and a couple of margaritas. I was surprised that the manager never came over to us, to say he was sorry or something. We could see him, and he was keeping an eye on us, like he was waiting for us to ask for a free meal!
It was just kind of strange.
I had a very bad sprain and had to use a wheelchair for the rest of the vacation.
Of course, we had a great time anyway! :)

Being from Ohio and of Irish heritage I really know mexican food....
But I say Give it a try isn't that what you go vacationing for to try new things and have a good time.
I have eaten there and found it very pleasant.
Try it and judge for yourself

There is a reason why the restaurant is so dark and it's not because they want to create a special atmosphere!!

The food is (JMHO) poor with the service being barely acceptable. The lighting is keep dim so you can't see how poorly prepared the food is. If you want a taste of SAI, go over to the Cantina and pray you avoid food poisoning!

SAI is on my MUST AVOID even if it were the last restuarant open at WDW list.

We have many authentic Mexican restraunts in our area so we know good Mexican food. Although the atmosphere was the best the food and service were not that great. Go for lunch when the it's less expensive and enjoy the atmosphere. Don't forget the boat ride.

Boy, you do get all kinds of opinions of this place. We love SAI. We love the atmosphere, the food, the margaritas, it's all good. It is VERY dark in there, but it does add to the atmosphere.

I recommend skipping breakfast and then going for an early lunch (opens at 11:30). With Mexico being the first stop at the WS, it's easy to get to. Try it for yourself.

It sure beats the pants off the Italian restaurant!

We love................... the margaritas

I think BrianD is on to something. Show up with an empty stomach, drink lots of margaritas, and who cares what the food or service is like ;).
