How Formal is Formal Night?

I have heard that formal night has a wide range of options. For a 7 day Eastern Magic cruise, what have people typically worn? Tuxedo & Gown? Suit and tie & Cocktail dress? Need some advice - we don't want to look out of place. We are at the early dinner seating and have 2 kids ages 9 & 5.

You will see all kinds of dress from tuxes to shirt and tie for the guys and formal gowns, to cocktail dresses to pantsuits for the ladies. Just go in what you feel comfortable in and you'll be fine. Nobody really stuck out to me as being out of place unless they were in t-shirts and shorts.

Joanne is right - you will see a wide variety. I'd say it's about 25-35% in tuxes (our last cruise was the 10 day so I think the numbers might have been a little higher), about 75% in suits and the balance in shirt/tie.

For the woman it was everything from long gowns to "little black dresses" and nice pant suits.

Many people use formal night to take a nice family portrait and it is great to see the little ones get dressed up too. You'll see many little girls in princess dresses.

On the last Western I was on you saw maybe a handful of men in Tuxes and women in ball gowns,,,most wore suits and dresses or pant suits.....except the guy 2 table over who wore a tank top with his hairy back hair sticking out! We were not even planning on going but once we saw how people were dressed I ended up putting on a pair of black slacks and white blouse and didn't feel out of place at all. This time around I am skipping it since I really didn't care for anything on the formal night menu, we are going to do Palo that night.
