How fast did your child recover after tonsilectomy? What did you feed them?

My son was around 4 1/2 when he had his out. He was in pain and sick to his stomach when he woke up after the procedure. By the time we got home later that day he asked to have a hotdog! Of course we didn't give it to him. That night he was in some pain but by the next day he was doing great. I was really surprised at how quickly he recovered. Good luck to you!

Wow, I am glad you posted! I was reading the other posts thinking that my daughter was the odd one out! She had the tonsils and adnoids removed when she was in kindergarten. I gave her pain meds 2 or 3 times, only when she needed it, I would not keep her drugged unless she really needed it. She was back to school after a week but could not play gym. The hardest days were days 3-7 because she felt just fine and wanted to ride her bike and swim and she was supposed to be kept on the quiet side and its hard to keep a kid that feels fine down! No red food but since she did not drink anything other than milk back then the Dr said it was fine to give it to her just so she wouldn't dehydrate and Wendys chicken nuggets the day after surgery were fine too since they are on the soft side.

DS's doc used sutures when his were removed. MUCH less likely to have bleeding issues later than just using cautery. So he told us to let him eat whatever he wanted to. He did really well. Just took tylenol the first two or three days.

my 2yo had his tonsils out, adenoids out and er tubes in This pst October. Her stayed overnight.

I did not give him him ice cream. Stayed away for hard foods and hot foods for 2-3 days and he was back to normal

Thanks for the tips. The only problem I have is that she is incredibly picky as it is when it comes to food so if she like scrambled eggs and mashed potatos it would be a different story. :lmao: I'll just try my best to find things for her to eat!

When she gets hungry enough, she will eat.

DD had her's out when she had just turned 5. She had them out on a Monday, spent one night in the hospital, by Wednesday she was up and ready to go. We started with ice cream and soft foods but she was REALLY hungry. Mashed potatoes were great because they filled her up. We moved on to sandwiches and after a couple days she was pretty much eating everything. We didn't let her eat really hard or sharp foods like chips for a while. Kids pretty much know what they need to recover, some kids want to be up and going and when they get tired will rest--others just want to lay on the couch when they don't feel well. Just follow her cues.
