With the exception of the time we drove from NY to Disney, we've never rented a car. You can take a cab from your resort or call Mears transport and arrange a round trip. We've done both and they've both worked nicely. Though Mears can be a bit pricey because you have to pay per person. The cab is cheaper.
A generic example of Magic Kingdom to SW/DC shows about $32. If you wanted to go really cheap you could catch a bus. Would take a lot longer but 1/10th the cost.
I would call a cab,but many people suggest Mears.Taking the Lynx bus from Downtown Disney shows the trip taking 50 minutes which is not too bad but maybe worth a try,especially if on a budget.
