We hadn't planned on going back to DW this year, but last week DH said, "Why don't we go to FW next December ?" so I called and made reservations. BUT, we wanted a preferred site and all that's available is partial hookup. We're going Dec. 16-23. We have a pop-up, so partial is okay, but we really wanted the preferred.
Anyway, here's my question. DH said that we should go ahead and reserve a site for Dec. 2005 now, to make sure we get a preferred. Is that a good idea?
And should I keep calling back, hoping for a cancellation for 2004, or is it hopeless?

The easy answer is yes and yes.

Remember, when calling for reservations, call in the morning. Cancellations are updated in the computer system each evening so yu have better luck in the morning to find something.

Keep trying for dec 2004

Last year we decided on about 4 weeks notice to go in March. No prefered sites were available(also 2 of the nights had no sites available) . We booked non prefered with the days available. Each day we would log online to check prefered was available. After doing all this we ended up with all the nights we wanted for prefered with 3 separate reservations. We did not have to switch sites. We just went each morning of the day the new reservation to "check in". I would book the non prefered site now, then keep checking if prefered is available. If you cannot get the stretch you want, try taking 1 day off at a time to see what is available. People seem to cancel as the date gets closer. If you do find a couple days at a time and decide you want to take them, always book the prefered site 1st, then book the days left that will be non prefered again, then cancel the 1st resie for the full vacation once your resies are confirmed because you do not want to find yourself without a reservation for any of the nights. If you do end up with multiple resies, remember each one does require a deposit. Also I'm not sure what the cancelation police for full refund is(1 think it is 5 days prior to check in. not sure).

My game plan is always to make reservations as soon as I know my trip dates. Then if codes become available I call back to modify the reservation. That way I am at least assured a spot.

So yes, I'd reserve for 2005 now.
