How far in advance??

My husband and I are planning a family vacation to Disney next year. And we were wondering how far in advance do we need to start looking to buy points? We were thinking of AKL studio with a savannah view.

What time of year are you thinking about going? Also, are you planning on buying directly through Disney or via resale?

We wanted to rent at first and then if we liked it we were thinking about buying resale. was wondering how far in advance do we need to start making reservation plans with an owner.

if you definitely want AKV, or any other resort, you should book with someone who owns at that resort during the 11-7 priority window. Between 7 and 11 months in advance of your check-in date, only owners of that resort may book. At 7 months, it opens up to all owners of DVC.

Now, you can often book within that 7 month window, bit if AKV is a "must do" for you, without a second choice in resort, then I'd be looking during that priority window, especially if you want concierge level or a "value" class room.

As Chuck indicated, you want to start looking about a year in advance of your travel dates if you definitely want a particular resort. That way, you can have someone lined up to make the reservation exactly at the 11 month mark, which provides the highest chance of getting what you are looking for.

That kind of planning is also part of the DVC experience. While last minute trip bookings do happen quite a bit, in general DVC works best for those who can plan at least 7 months and preferably 11 months in advance.

Ideally you would start the purchase process about 14 months before your vacation, 3 months for “shopping” and actually buying and getting your points in place and 11 to have maximum priority at AKV. In practicality if you are not traveling during the very busiest times and have some flexibility 10-11 month is doable.
