Sometimes it is not really necessary more than a week out, but I always say better safe than sorry. Once I called at 30 days out for dinner at Cafe Orleans and was dissapointed that the 1/2 hour time frame I wanted was not available. If you know what and when you want, call!

I also have never had a problem, but I also dont want to experience the disappointment, so I always book as early as I can, 60 days out. Like PP said, better safe than sorry.
On a related note, I'm wondering about making reservations for most, if not all of your meals while staying at DLR....
My boys and I are staying about 3 days in the park (plus one day in universal studios) and there are about 10 restaurants in the park that we (well, I) want to hit while we're there. Most, if not all of the restaurants we want, are recommended to get reservations for.
My question is, how much planning around your meals do people typically do??
I know places like the Blue Bayou, the Wine Country Trattoria and the Vineyard Room are all places that PS is strongly recommended, so that's easy enough. However with all the restaurants we want to visit on our trip, most of these places we should reserve seating at....but I don't want our trip to revolve around meals, do we? I mean, take our day in California Adventure, for example. We're going to Storytellers for breakfast, lunch at the Wine Country Trattoria and dinner at Ariel's Grotto, all of which we're going to have reservations for. So uh...that entire day, we'll be running around the park based on our meals. Do most people do this?
