How far do your high school age kids walk to the school bus stop?

Under a mile isn't far at all, a teenager should be able to walk that with no problem.

As long as it's a safe route, I 110% agree.

My 14 yo daughter has about a mile to walk for school....but since more than half of that mile is through trees, sticker bushes, and a field that they don't mow, I'll be driving her.

The alternative is for her to walk down the highway with no shoulder or sidewalk.

This is the problem I have, it isn't really how far, but how dangerous the walk. And in our heat and with their back packs being so heavy I am not sure that I would want them to walk a mile with those things on their back. Aslo not in the rain, I don't want my kid sitting in wet clothes all day and here in Florida we get some wicked rain storms and when we do, (oh lord here comes anther debate) most moms actually drive their kids to the bus stop and wait for the bus to get there.

My teens only walk a few blocks, but my elementary school aged kids walk 7/10 of a mile to school (budget cuts last year & the school cut their bus to save money)

And in our heat and with their back packs being so heavy I am not sure that I would want them to walk a mile with those things on their back. I'm 34...and I don't think I want to walk a mile through a major downpour, and then sit through 7 hours of classes in wet clothes.

I also would not want to walk a mile in 100 degree heat either. Yeah... I would be driving my kid too.

On nice days.... they would be walking...but crappy days. There is no reason why they have to be THAT uncomfortable all day.

Also my kids carry computers to school so I wouldn't really want to take any chances on them getting wet. For us it doesn't matter the stop is at the endof the street so we do walk them out with an umbrella. It isn't a big deal only people on the dis boards seem to make a big deal out of it.

OMG, no not every day. only the really rainy ones. Parents around here really do raise independent kids. Most of the parents work so these kids can and do take care of themselves. When it does rain, usually a parent that goes in later or one that doesn't work will have kids piled in her car. The high school bus stop is kind of sloped and the rain really pools fast, they could be standing in a huge pool of water in no time flat.

I am sorry but, is this a joke? Your talking about a high school student here, not a little kid. I am quite certain he knows how to walk down the street without getting hit by a car. I hope you did not tell him that you called the school because I would be MORTIFIED if my mother did that to me. I used to walk several miles home from HS because the cutoff for busing was one street over from mine. So I walked. I am still alive today.

It might be, but it also just might be how the stops are set up. A lot of the kids on our street get picked up at their homes, mine will walk up the street about 4 houses because that is where the bus stops. But your right, it may be because of the "issue" that was raised last year.

The OP seemed more that she was mad he had to walk, not about anything else.

It wasn't titled, I think my kid was singled out because I complained. OP was upset because her child had to walk less than 3/4 mile, and was further upset by people not agreeing with her.

In the original post she spells out her trouble last year with the bus company. I do agree that a mile is not too far to walk, but in this case I think there was an unfairness issue.

For me it is the situation that is different. I will admit that I don't want my kid walking a mile to school or the bus stop, it is hot here and those back packs are heavy. I wouldn't want to go to work all nasty and sweaty and I am sure my kids don't either. It really doesn't matter because the bus stop is close by so they don't have to.

Now the same 13 year old , that I don't want walking a mile to school or the bus in the heat with his back pack, will come home and ride his bike a couple of miles with his friends across a major 4 lane high way to go to McDonalds and get a snack. so for me it is about where they are going, and what they are carrying not just the distance they have to walk.

Yeah, I think the stop being at one kid's house instead of yours or in the middle is likely directly related to your complaint last year. But we live in a small town. A larger place is likely more anonymous.

I walked to high school unless a friend picked me up when I got older and kids were driving themselves. The walk was probably a mile, maybe 1.25 ish. It was probably a little over a mile. I see kids that are close to the high school now walking along the highway leading to the school. Speed limit is 45 with no sidewalk. The cross country tea, also runs the highway every day during season.

Unless a high school student has a documented disability that would prevent good judgement or balance on a road to walk to a bus stop, I don't think that is any trouble. If you do, you can always drive him to school.
