How far away from home did you go when you left for college, the service or just left?

I went two hours away from home. For me it was just about a perfect distance...far enough away that Mom & Dad weren't going to pop in unannounced, but close enough to easily go home for the weekend when I wanted to. And it was close enough for them to come get me the day I was really sick freshman year and the on campus health center said that if my parents. didn't come get me in the next few hours they would have me admitted to the hospital because I was too sick to be in the dorms. I went home, saw my own doctor and recovered in my own bed under Moms care.

I went 8 hours away (KC to Chicago).

Our oldest commutes about 25 minutes from home.

We just got home last night from dropping our second (first to leave home) at school 3 1/2 hours away. It was a lot harder than I expected.

College about 600 miles. From NYC to Pittsburgh.
Marriage about 1600 miles. From Philadelphia to Lisbon Portugal.
The single best thing I did was to leave NYC.

Always encouraged my kids to go away. Nothing beats seeing the world from a totally different perspective.

My oldest stayed close
My youngest is about 700 miles away in Cincinnati.
