How fair are you in your gift giving?

DH and I have 1 daughter, 1 son-in-law and 3 grandsons who are 2,4 and 6.

We get (and prefer) to get direct input from our daughter on the gifts for grandsons as there are 3 sets of grandparents, which complicates gifting.

For presents, the # of presents is close, but not always equal, we try to be sort of equal on $$$ too, however, it is more important for us to be equal in the WOW factor of their gifts. We try not to go overboard with $$$ spent, because we contribute to the boys’ 529s monthly.

I’m most excited about the gift we bought the family. It cost $7 or $8, and is a personalized jar of Nutella, from the Nutella restaurant in Chicago.

We have one child - DS20 - so use your imagination! For my nieces and nephews, it varies. Two of my nephews are married and live out of state so we don't do gifts anymore. My youngest niece and nephew(twins) are 20 so I try to spend an equal amount of money but the number of gifts may differ....they don't care much. My oldest niece is 28 and while we have always done a bit more for her (we are very close - she lives five doors down the street and is like a big sister to our son) - since her mom(my sister) passed away unexpectedly last year and she was really big on making the holidays special for her, I try to make up for that a bit more. With us, it's mostly the gift of time - baking, learning family recipes, etc - and because my mom(84) lives with us and the entire season is a gift - baking, holiday meal prep, wrapping gifts, Christmas Eve traditions - all of those things are at the core of our family traditions going back to my childhood and I am glad that we can continue them for both our son and our niece, even though they are older now.

We have MIL, FIL, SIL, BIL, nephew on DW's side. We don't do presents on my side. Just gift cards. But we do presents for my 1-year-old nephew. DW likes to get 3 each for her side with between $30-$50 each. But I don't think we're having Christmas with DW's family this year.
