How easy is it to transfer points?

We're considering buying a small contract at AKV (50 pts) because it's all the cash we can afford right now, and we don't want to borrow. We plan on adding on over the next few years.

In the meantime, we would be planning on transferring points in to get enough for a stay (maybe 85-100 points/year).

I understand we would only be able to transfer once a year. How reasonable is it to expect that we would be able to transfer that many points in each year for the next 2-3 years? We're renting points for 2010, and there are TONS of people renting, but with the limitations on transferring points, I wouldn't want to find out too late that it's too difficult to find someone willing to transfer their points.

I think you'll have little trouble as long as you want a reasonably large number of points. Some folks are not willing to ust their one tranfer for 1-100 points. Also you may have to take a transfer from another home resort and that will only allow you to use the 7 month vs. 11 month window. Other than that you should have no trouble.

Actually it is 1 transfer per use year not per calendar year, so in reality right now you could do as many as 3 transfers, 2008 points (up till 11/31/09 when 2008 points are no longer current UY points, 2009 points and 2010 points).

If you check on the rental board there are lots of points for transfer, it is just a matter fo finding ones at the price you are willing to pay and the month and resort that match you vacation timing and 11 month priority needs (if any).

Technically there is a rule about not being able to accumulate more than 3 times your contracts points but I have never heard of it being applied to transferred points.

Actually, there are only 2 Use Years where transfers are allowed - the current Use Year and the upcoming Use Year.

At this time, the only 2008 points that could be transferred would have to be from someone's October or December 2008 Use Year into someone's October or December Use Year. Members with an October or December Use Year cannot yet transfer any 2010 points.

If you have Use Year of February thru September your 2008 Use Year has already closed and no points can be transferred into or out of that Use Year - but they can transfer 2009 and 2010 points.

The "3 years of points" rule defines the limit regarding current, banked and borrowed points, but does not include additional points transferred into an account. There is no limit there except for the one-per-year policy.

We have transferred points quite easily, but I would recommend that you do it every 2nd year just to be on the safe side. We got a better $/pt rate and don't have the hassle of looking for a transfer every year.

We were able to transfer someone's pts before their banking window. That way, we kept the points we needed to use early in the year and banked the extra points to use in the next year.

I found that I unexpectedly had some family members want to join us on a trip and therefore needed to make another transfer. Luckily, I hadn't done a transfer from the current year and was able to do the extra transfer.

So I would say to look at doing a transfer of what you will need for 2 years and be careful of the use year and banking windows for those points. This will leave you some wiggle room to do another transfer if needed. :thumbsup2

I have found transferring points both in and out to be fairly easy. You should have no problem finding someone to transfer points for the current use year. Keep in mind that certain resort points will be easier to get than other. If your home resort is one of the popular resorts like BCV, it may be harder to get those points versus say SSR or OKW.

Yes there are only 2 year worth of points that may transferred but they include 3 date years. Currently Sept, Oct, Dec 2008 may be transferred, all of 2009 and Feb, March, April, June, Aug 2010.

So for clarity for 1 membership a member never has more than 2 years that they can transfer at once but could potentially transfer 3 year within 1 calendar year, For transfers in theoretically a member could make 3 transfers on the same day (take today as an example) such as Oct 2008, June 2009, and August 2010.

It is important to remember that it is the person transferring the points out which controls when which points are allowed to be transferred. The only restriction on transferring in is that current year points (not borrowed or banked) from any one year can only be brought in 1 time (assuming you have not already done a transfer out for that use year).

I don't think the bolded part is correct unless there is more than one contact involved.

If you have an October or December Use Year and are therefore now in your 2008 Use Year, you would be limited to accepting a transfer today of someone's 2008 points into your 2008 Use Year and someone's 2009 points into your 2009 Use Year - since 2010 is neither the current or next Use Year for those still in their 2008 Use Year, they would need to wait until their 2009 Use Year begins to accept a transfer of 2010 points. In addition, no other transfers could then be made until 2011 points can betransferred.

In addition, there are no longer any September 2008 points remaining since we are now in the September, 2009 Use Year. Octoberand December 2008 points are all that remain from the 2008 Use Year.

Sorry if I was unclear, these (in bold) are the use year months of the person and points that you are transfering in (which the transferred points would retain).

Woops Yes sept 2008 have expired, so add Sept 2010 to the list
