How easy is it to rent out your points?

We are considering purchasing DVC. How easy or hard is it to rent out your points if you're not using them and don't want to bank them? Is there a pretty good market for them? Thanks!

We've had very quick (less than 24 hours) responses by wonderful people on the rent trade board. Everyone has been so nice and willing to work with us under our terms of rental. No problems here at all!

Right now it's not bad. IMHO don't buy points with the idea that renting will be easy. You should have tried renting following the events of 9-11. My point is that if you have points left over, great, then rent them. But even though things may be good today, who knows what tomorrow will bring so don't make renting a part of the purchase decision.

Renting is getting to be too much work. Too many fussy non-owners. Buy what you plan on using.

Add to this the glut of members that are willing to rent (i.e. give away) points at $10 or less. If things continue the way they have been going, pretty soon you may be paying people to rent your points. I agree with Deb & Bill, buy what you think you will use and rent any extra you will need from the R&T board for $8-9. Good Luck.

I have never rented points on the DIS but have rented to a co-worker which turned out to be very easy. I had planned a vacation which fell through. I posted a notice on the bulletin board at my office and within 10 minutes had received two phone calls saying they wanted the vacation. This could be another way to rent points. Annmarie

I agree with the other posters. Don't buy with the intention of renting, buy knowing that in the event you can't use the points renting or transferring them is a very viable option. I recently bought a contract with banked points I knew I was not going to be able to use. I hoped that I would be able to rent them but I assumed that they would have zero value when I purchased the contract. It only took about 2 weeks to rent in the trade board and I am pleased that I was able to essentially cover my annual maintence fees. I got $10 a point. It was a bit of a pain. I had to call member services and check on availability about 20 times and was ready to give up when the right renter finally came along. Looking back I would do it again. I have 150 points and am hoping to take a year off every few years and use the money to cover the maintence costs.

My understanding is that transfering the points is much easier than renting. If you plan how you are using your points far enough ahead you can probably transfer them to another member rather easily.

When I bought more points at SSR this year, I rented out 285 points to 3 different people for $10 per point in less than 3 hours (just by listing the availability on the Points for Rent section of these Boards.)

We have rented out our points from time to time- Generally it wasn't that bad = the last time though I was so agravated by people who had me check dates & availability & then rented from other people. It takes a lot of time to post, get contact, check availability & double check information. It bothers me when people would ask for one time & when you get back to them, they would ask for another date- if you want several times, ask me all at once!!! I work & have 3 small children - I don't have time to be dancing on people's whims. That being said - when we have rented out our points, we have met some lovely people & a couple of them we have stayed in touch with & have become friends. It is nice. I have only really had one time that I had a bad experience where I booked the points only to have the person comeback & say forget it I decided to do something else. Thankfully I was able to use the points for someone else that year.
